Weekly Time Waster - ‘Survive – Wilderness Survival’

When I was in elementary school, one of my favorite books – I still remember to this day – was “Hatchet”by Gary Paulsen. If you never read it, it was about a thirteen-year-old boy who survives a plane crash and has to survive in the wilderness with only a hatchet. It was a heartwarming story about a kid’s survival, but it also helps beg the question: could you survive in the wilderness with only the bare essentials?

I’m not going to tell you to go out and actually try it, because that’s what video games are for!

“Survive – Wilderness Survival” is an interesting digital take on learning how to survive a wilderness situation. It’s a survival-themed simulation and text adventure where you must decide how to best spend your time every single day and what action is the most crucial for you in the moment to be able to survive.

The game puts you at a distance from where you need to travel; for every day and night in the game, you must make decisions. You could walk for four hours, but during that four-hour walk, you could possibly fall and hurt yourself. You need to find food and water, build shelters and make fires. All while taking consideration your current health, hydration levels, and of course, the weather. It might be best to rest and make shelter on a stormy day than try and walk for three hours.

The game offers four different scenarios for you to choose from with increasing difficulty levels, the two hardest are a mountain scenario, and the most difficult being a swamp. This game might not be the real thing, but it’s interesting to simulate and see how you might fare in a potential real-world situation.

“Survive – Wilderness Survival” is free to download on the Android and IOS stores.
