Matching games are still quite the rage - who doesn't love 'Bejeweled' or 'Candy Crush' saga? - but you wouldn't think that you could make a real strategy game out of them. Well, you can, apparently. 'Colonization' takes the basic premise of a match three and makes you really work for some payoff.

You start with a basic grid, and two options to for placement. They fall into two basic categories: wood and stone. You match three pieces of rock, to make some boulders, three boulders to make a pile of masonry, three piles of masonry to make a fort. The wood section begins with hay, and similarly works its way through piles of logs to sawn lumber to a basic farm. There are three levels that I've found (there are more, I just haven't gotten to that level yet) of each farm and fort that you can build up. And that's the gist of it. Sort of.

As you start unlocking the secrets of the game and earning achievements through play, you can 'level up' your hero (which is apparently you). The more you learn, the easier the game gets and it never gets too easy. In fact, this almost wasn't a time waster at all, since I almost threw my laptop out the window out of frustration several times take that for what it's worth. But I stuck with it. And you really should, for more than just the crippling addiction to it, because it gets really fun once you get the hang of it.
