Weekly Time Waster - ‘’

Written by Matt Fern

One of the movies that terrified me the most as a kid was “Jaws”. After watching it, I didn’t want to go swimming in the ocean for a while; it might have taken me about a year or so to conjure up the courage to go into the ocean again. At this point in my life, I’ve watched it numerous times and the fear of going into the ocean is gone.

But now I get the chance to be the danger that keeps people out of the water, thanks to “”

“” is a multiplayer game that sees one person take on the role of the iconic shark, who is tasked with eating people in the ocean and sinking boats into the bottom of the ocean. The other players? Well, they control the boats. Those who play as boats must patrol the coastline and pick up the swimmers who are stranded. They also have the task of turning Jaws into chum. As you pick up swimmers in your boat, you begin to run out of space and are going to “need a bigger boat.” The more swimmers you pick up, the larger your boat gets. The larger your boat gets, the easier it is to take down Jaws with it.

All in all, “” is a fun little game that brings back the memories of how terrifying Jaws truly was as a movie character. Only this time around, you get to either devour your way to victory as the iconic Jaws or take him out with your bigger boat – the choice is yours.

“” is free to download on the Android and IOS stores!

Weekly Time Waster - ‘Grass Cut’

Written by Matt Fern

According to our friend, the groundhog, spring is coming early this year. As I look out the window from my desk and see the snow falling in copious amounts, however, I don’t concur one bit with that outlook. Also - if we are looking forward to spring, then we must be looking forward to cutting our grass each and every week.

So until that time comes, why not get in some practice? We will do so in this week’s Time Waster, “Grass Cut.”

Weekly Time Waster - ‘Apex Legends’

Written by Matt Fern

This week we are going to take a detour from mobile gaming and head over to the PC/console realm.

If you’ve played any free-to-play games on console lately, they’ve most likely been some sort of variation of a battle royale game - most notably, Fortnite or PUBG (free on mobile at least). A new kid has arrived on the block though – “Apex Legends”. This game was announced the same day it was released and took the entire gaming world by surprise, as it was kept a complete secret.

So let’s find out what it’s all about – and how you can waste some time on it.

Weekly Time Waster - ‘Color Bump 3D’

Written by Matt Fern

One thing we like in our Time Waster games is pure simplicity. The simpler the game, the easier it is to waste time on. Games that are extremely challenging are always welcome, but sometimes a fun and relaxing game really takes the cake.

Well, in “Color Bump 3D”, that mentioned simplicity is offered … and rewarded.

“Color Bump 3D” sees you play as a ball that needs to get from one end of the level to another – pretty typical. Nothing you haven’t seen before. The level is littered with holes and obstacles. All the obstacles are in large groups and have colors of their own. The biggest catch to getting to the other side of the level is that you can only roll your ball through certain colored obstacles. For instance, one level might see you only able to touch yellow objects, so in a group of white and yellow objects, you can only pass through the yellow. Touch the white and it is game over. The obstacles are tightly grouped together and in different shapes; it can be a really fun challenge to get through them. And really, that’s all there is to it!

“Easy to play, hard to master” is the game’s motto, and it couldn’t ring truer. With over 100 levels, this game should keep you occupied for a while, and it requires nothing from you but a little time to waste!

“Color Bump 3D” is free to download on the Android and IOS stores.

Weekly Time Waster - ‘Nano Golf: Hole in One’

Written by Matt Fern

As spring nears the horizon, many of us look toward the recreational sports of the season. One of the biggest of the bunch is golf. Well, while golfing season is still weeks away, at least we have our phones to keep us occupied.

This week, we take a look at the digital golfing game “Nano Golf: Hole in One.”

“Nano Golf: Hole in One” can essentially be looked at as a trick-shot putting game. Each level is a puzzle, and in each puzzle, you need to take a shot, have your ball hit some coins, and effectively get a hole in one. The fun part is seeing how many levels you can complete in a row without missing, as they get progressively harder and harder to master.

I haven’t really completed the game yet, so I can’t speak as to how many courses there are, but I can confirm that there are a LOT. As each course changes its layout to keep you on your toes, it also offers a variety of traps. Some courses have traps that you need to avoid or are shaped in a way that taking a wrong shot can see your ball flying back to where you started. Some courses even have “portals” that your ball goes through to get to a different part, figuring out the angles of your shot can get tricky on them.

As you collect coins on the courses, you get to unlock different golf balls that have unique abilities, such as a golf ball that has a gravity field to collect coins, which lets you take an easier shot without having to aim for said coins.

This game won’t help your real-life putting skills, but it can make you feel like the best in the world! “Nano Golf: Hole in One” is free to download on the Android and IOS stores.

Weekly Time Waster - ‘Beach Buggy Racing 2’

Written by Matt Fern

“Mario Kart” has been around for as long as I can remember. It holds plenty of dear memories from my childhood - sitting around the Nintendo 64 with friends, racing around a colorful map and shooting turtles at one another to determine who was the best. Nintendo has built up and refined “Mario Kart” over the years, but it’s never made its way onto mobile phones. There have been some fun rip-offs though.

The latest in the Kart Racing mobile scene is a game called “Beach Buggy Racing 2,” with many elements that you know and love from “Mario Kart.”

We’ve seen a lot of the “Transformers” franchise over the years, watching our favorite cartoon characters of Optimus Prime and Bumblebee come to life. When you make movies about awesome, alien transforming robots blowing things up on a regular basis, there are bound to be games that crop up on the same subject.

The latest iteration of that particular game-type would be “Transformers: Bumblebee Overdrive” - we’ll abbreviate it to “TBO” for short.

Based vaguely on the new “Bumblebee” movie, “TBO” combines the game styles of top-down racers and top-down combat to create a fun and refreshing gaming experience that you might have found in an arcade. Playing as the beloved Bumblebee, you are set on an adventure with car chases, explosive shootouts and – as with any retro arcade game – boss fights. In each level, you must race at high speed, collecting coins along the way to reach a Decepticon base. When you arrive, Bumblebee transforms into his mechanized self and you are set for a top-down full-frontal assault on the base, taking out enemies and defenses. Then, when you get to the heart of the base, a Decepticon boss awaits you for a final battle.

The coins you collect on each level help you to unlock other notable Autobots such as Optimus Prime, Sideswipe, Jazz and more. This game really brings back the joy that was 80’s arcade gaming, with the gameplay, stylized graphics and even soundtrack to boot!

“Transformers: Bumblebee Overdrive” is free to download on the IOS and Android stores. Autobots, roll out and download this game!

Weekly Time Waster – ‘Words With Friends 2’

Written by Matt Fern

Scrabble has entertained friends and families for many years as one of the best word-building games of all time, challenging you to not only thrown down the best word you know onto the board to accumulate points, but also challenging you to expand your vocabulary and discover new words. In a world where many are busy, and one might not be able to find the time to sit and play a few games of Scrabble, we are saved by technology.

I give you - “Words With Friends 2.”

Now you might ask, what about the first “Words With Friends” game? Well, this is their newest version, and while it has all the same offerings as the previous game, it also brings lots of new things to the table. In “WWF2,” you are pitted against friends, or strangers from all around the world in an intense game of building up the highest score by spelling out words.

Just like Scrabble, the board contains boosts such as “double word” or “triple letter” on which you can strategically place your words and boost your score. What’s nice is that the game is always live, so you and the other player can make moves on your own time until the game finishes; no need to sit around for 30 minutes and play the game fully out.

In this new version, they have also added solo challenges, where you can play against a computer player to train and improve your word skills. Each computer player you defeat brings a newer more challenging one.

“Words With Friends 2” is free to download on the Android and IOS stores. May the best friend win!

Weekly Time Waster - ‘’

Written by Matt Fern

By the time you’re reading this, Christmas will be over. Presents will be opened and bellies will be filled with food. However, that doesn’t mean the holiday and winter festivities can’t continue! We may not have gotten to have a white Christmas this year, but we can still play with snow in video games. So, in this week’s Time Waster, I sought to spread a bit of winter cheer.

“” is an extremely simple, yet quickly addictive game that places you in an arena with a few other players. Each player controls a snow pusher that can create a snowball. Your goal is to push the other players off the snow-cliff. You do this by creating a large snowball and running into them or firing the snowball from a distance. The bigger your snowball, the farther you push the other snowplow player. If you don’t think that you can take the time to create a large snowball, you can create multiple small snowballs and fling them around. Be the last snowplow on the cliff and you win!

This game is all about strategy, but also about having some snowy fun. It’s like a real snowball fight. You can be the person who hurls massive snowballs to take out your foes, but possibly miss. Or you can be the guy who plays it smart and sits from a distance firing small snowballs left and right. This game only requires two fingers to play, as one finger controls your snowplow and the other controls the direction you plow or shoot your snowball.

You may not be able to throw snowballs outside this week, but nothing will stop you from pushing snowplows off snowy cliffs in “” This game is free to download on the Android and IOS stores.

Weekly Time Waster - ‘Assassin’s Creed Rebellion’

Written by Matt Fern

There was a movie that came out recently called “Assassin’s Creed,” loosely based on a video game franchise that has risen up as one of the best in the industry.

“Assassin’s Creed” takes history and puts its own alternative backstory against it with a secret organization called the Templar Order and a secret organization called the Assassin Brotherhood. The Templar Order seeks to save humanity from itself by controlling free will. As that can certainly be seen as a problem, the Assassin Order fights back to ensure the survival of freedom, which would allow for human progression.

Well, if you aren’t looking to get into that universe on a gaming console, you can delve into it on your phone!

“Assassin’s Creed Rebellion” is a turn-based RPG and base-building game that puts you in the shoes as a leader of the Assassin’s. You must build a fortress and develop various assassins to push your groups agenda of stopping the Templars from controlling the world and its history. You send your assassins on missions to infiltrate bases, take out high profile targets, and even steal treasure. The treasure can be used to purchase upgrades and build your base larger. The more resources you have, ensures you can equip your assassins with the best gear possible.

With a super fun battle system full of cool assassinations, many assassins to recruit, and items to build in your base, “Assassin’s Creed Rebellion” is a fantastic time-waster to play during this holiday week.

“Assassin’s Creed Rebellion” is free to download on the Android and IOS stores.
