Time Waster - 'Look Up'

Written by Katy England

We spend lots of our time telling you how to plunge extra time into your devices, so it only seems responsible to point you to a new viral video about how that may not be the very best idea. 'Look Up' is a spoken-word film about how we are isolating ourselves while immersing our social lives in our technology.

The video blends poetry with imagery of people wandering through life missing big moments because of being drawn into the highly editable version of our online selves. It isn't lost on anyone, author or audience, that the medium in which we view the video is part of social media (I saw it on Facebook first), but it's a really good reminder to maybe switch off for a moment and waste your time on something a bit more worthwhile. Take five minutes, watch the video, then grab your bestie and go outside.

Time Waster - #I Lost a Bet

Written by Katy England

Have you ever placed a friendly wager only to have it bite you in the keister, and suddenly you find yourself dyeing your hair an unnatural hue and dancing The Robot in front of a packed bar? Well, you're not alone.

If you check out www.lostabet.org you can peruse the galleries of other poor souls whose sports teams came in second, who boasted about their prowess a little too loudly, or who were just plain bad at cribbage. In addition to the pictures are brief stories about how the unlucky one had to eat worms, dress up in a tutu and paint his nails or get a YOLO tattoo due to poor choices.

Time Waster - The return of Gourmet Gaming'

Written by Katy England

What did we do before someone combined chocolate and peanut butter? Macaroni and Cheese? 'Gourmet Gaming' is a blog that is the sublime blending of two genres of geekery that work so well together it's hard to imagine life without them.

Some may say that cooking is not geeky, but I would hazard that anything that can make you feel like a mad scientist or an alchemist is indeed of that realm.

Time Waster - Tinysasters

Written by Katy England

'Tinysasters' is a cute and at times infuriating city-builder. You are given a map and are charged with growing your civilization as well as protecting it from many of the natural disasters that can befall that small area.

The game involves resource management, upgrades and dealing with incoming disasters. You can purchase upgrades with your resources to mitigate or even avoid certain types of damage. Your score is based on meeting certain goals in a certain time period. You are awarded a number of stars based on how quickly you can meet the criteria for beating the level.

Time Waster - Will it Blend?

Written by Katy England

That little three-word question is an amazing one. Blendtec blenders founder Tom Dickson has one incredibly awesome question that he has been asking for seven years: Will it blend? The answer is almost always a resounding 'yes!'

There are hundreds of videos of Tom blending anything imaginable, from baseballs, glow sticks, pool cues, cubic zirconia (instead of diamonds for budgetary reasons), silly putty, golf clubs and Justin Bieber memorabilia and albums. The list goes on and on well over 100 items have been blended.

Time Waster - Google Life

Written by Katy England

Google has rolled out a new program that enhances their weakened Google+ social networking. It's called Google Life. At birth, Google Glass is installed by lasers into the optical nerve of infants, along with some software upgrades into the neural pathways of the brain to record and post data to your Google+ accounts. Now, from the moment you start howling into life, you can post to your social media wall.

Videos, clever and witty posts and snapshots are all recorded and posted with simply a thought. The software is really quite intuitive, since you're simply posting it with your brain. Now every aspect of your life is recorded, cataloged and voted upon by the technological world.

Time Waster - Glean 2'

Written by Katy England

I'm not going to lie: I do not know all of the ins and outs of this game. For such a simplistic game, it is vastly complicated, and I've only scratched the barest surface of what it has to offer. Basically, you are an extra-terrestrial miner. You go to various different planets in search of new minerals, crystals, gasses and other items to study.

You can also find artifacts to research and pick up various trophy items from defeating critters that can cause damage to your exploratory vessel.

Time Waster - Robin McKinley's serial blog Kes'

Written by Katy England

Growing up, I read voraciously. I've slacked off a bit in my old age, but I can still tear through a good fantasy novel in record time if I've got some breathing room to do so. I love it, and one of the reasons I love it is Robin McKinley. She's written some of my favorite novels, including 'The Blue Sword,' 'The Hero and the Crown' and 'Beauty.'

Her work usually consists of strong female leads, magic of some sort and characters that almost pop off the page. I have a select club of books that I can re-read when I'm in between new books, and she's in that club. I was rereading 'The Blue Sword' when I decided to see if there were any more of her novels set in her fictional land of Damar alas, outside of the two novels I read, there were not. But what I did find was profoundly better. McKinley has a serial fiction blog. Not only does she actively maintain this blog, she already had more than 100 posts to be read.

Time Waster - Celebrities Reading Mean Tweets

Written by Allen Adams

Twitter is a strange and wonderful place where ordinary folks can rub virtual elbows with celebrities of all stripes. Said ordinary people can also be incredibly mean about those lofted up on pedestals. For Twitter's sixth anniversary, Jimmy Kimmel decided to have the celebrities who have been trashed by your average Joe and Jane read those tweets aloud to hilarious results.

I suppose it must be said that even though the expletives have been blurred out, you may want to use discretion if you're easily offended or have small children you don't want speaking in bleeps.
