Time Waster - Curl Up and Fly'

Written by Katy England

Oh, the cute. There is a lot to enjoy about 'Curl Up and Fly,' but the adorable little armadillo and his buddies really put this on another level for me.

For all intents and purposes, this is a very fun upgrade-rocket game, where you see how far you can shoot an armadillo on a rocket. A few things make this even more fun, not the least of which is that they have given you more control than other, similar games.

Time Waster - Quickies

Written by Katy England

Sometimes you don't want to get sucked into something that will take you hours or days to complete. Sometimes you have only a few minutes before the kids get up or before you have to make some phone calls or hit a meeting. The following games are great for those times.

Time Waster - Gridland'

Written by Katy England

There are some games you can play and stop at will. Safe games. Then there's something like 'Gridland.'

On its face, 'Gridland' looks like a match-three game. But it goes beyond that, adding elements of strategy, leveling up and, above all, risk to the game. It's split into two styles day and night. During the day, you are collecting resources by matching three or more. It starts out with three: wheat, iron ore and wood. As you collect enough, you create enough to build a new building a potter (I think) that allows you to harvest clay.

Time Waster - Nested

Written by Katy England

'Nested' is technically a clicking game, made by the same developer as 'Cookie Clicker' known for being just what it sounds like, a game where you click things.

But 'Nested' is a different kettle of fish. The game is set up like your desktop folders tend to be, an expandable + that you click on and see what's nested inside. You Start with a universe, inside the universe is a host of galactic super cluster, nested in there are countless galaxies, nested in there are star systems and nebula, planets, stars, continents and more.

Time Waster - SolarMax 2'

Written by Katy England

It's a beautiful, vibrant and colorful universe out there, and it's your job to stamp out anyone who differs from you and conquer all known worlds!

That's right, the world is not enough. You are trying to dominate entire star systems and take over key strategic weapons to destroy your enemies. And in all fairness, they are trying to do the same to you.

Time Waster - Shiritori

Written by Katy England

'Shiritori' is a fun and sometimes frustrating word game that you can play solo or with other real people. I've only ever played against the AI, so I don't know how it stacks up against a flesh and blood human.

The premise is simple: you are given a letter and prompted to come up with the longest word beginning with that letter as fast as you can. Once you're done, your opponent has to make a word from the last letter of your word. Then you have to make one from the last letter of his word.

Time Waster - Glitch Lab'

Written by Katy England

'Glitch Lab' is a fun little pixel platformer with minimal graphics where you have to figure out what glitch will allow you complete the level. Sometimes it's pretty easy, and sometimes you can be led astray.

You play a little figure trying to get from one door to another. Each level has a different glitch you need to exploit in order to win. It forces you to look beyond just your little sprite and take in the entire environment while you're playing and think outside the level. Games are played with forced-perspective, color dynamics and in-game physics. The game also riffs on other gaming conventions, in that there are little coins to collect, but you are told that they are meaningless. Sometimes the environment can kill you, and then sometimes it won't - you have to figure out when it will.

Time Waster - You're Getting Older'

Written by Katy England

Sometimes you feel on top of the world. Like you can do anything! And then you go and visit a website like 'You're Getting Older' and some of the shine gets rubbed off.

It's not all that bad, and it is a bit of fun. You enter the day, month and year of your birth and you get to see all manner of fascinating statistics about your life and how much older or younger other people are by comparison.

Time Waster - One Tap Quest'

Written by Katy England

Some games waste your time by being complicated, by having dozens of levels you have to conquer, or by investing time leveling up your character. And other just go for sheer addiction. That's what 'One Tap Quest's' game is. A friend of mine tagged me in a post on Facebook and I haven't been the same since.

The game is as basic as it gets: you have a 2D view of a map full of enemies walking in fixed paths across the field. You have one click to place your little sprite, and he will begin trucking and attempting to vanquish the foes in his path. His success depends on who he encounters first, and as you defeat foes in your very linear path, you can level up - but if you hit a bad guy who is beyond your scope, you die. It is really easy to die.
