Ring in school year on right note

Written by PR

BANGOR Do you hear that ringing? Alarm clocks and school bells are set to sound as back to school season approaches.

Smartphones and tablets continue to replace notebooks and textbooks as 21st century learning tools. Apps, eBooks, Internet access and online educational videos have enhanced the learning experience. It's no wonder that 47 percent of children have a cellphone, according to a recent U.S. Cellular survey. That is up from 36 percent in 2013.

PORTLAND For the second year in a row, U.S. Cellular is hosting casting calls for the hit ABC show 'Shark Tank,' providing small business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs from Maine and across the country an opportunity to achieve their business aspirations in the upcoming seventh season of the Emmy Award-winning show. The casting call in Portland will take place on Wednesday, July 29 at The Italian Heritage Center, 40 Westland Avenue in Portland.

'We are thrilled to collaborate with Shark Tank' for our second casting call tour and give our customers and people from across the country the chance to get their businesses off of the ground,' said Matt Kasper, director of sales for U.S. Cellular in New England. 'We look forward to bringing the casting call to Portland later this summer.'

FARMINGTON The University of Maine at Farmington is offering a new, week-long Creative-Tech Summer Camp for high school-aged students, 14 to 18, with an interest in creative media. This innovative, hands-on technology camp will help students learn, imagine, explore and create using the latest interactive media skills and techniques.

The camp runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., July 13-17, in the SPVI Mac/Art Lab, room 222, UMF Merrill Hall, 224 Main Street. Four one-day workshop-style sessions will be taught by UMF faculty and staff from Monday through Thursday with a presentation on Friday afternoon for students to show their work at the Emery Community Arts Center on campus.

BANGOR With summer break right around the corner, families now have more free time with their children to take a vacation, relax at the pool or just explore their community. Because most summer activities are outdoors and require traveling, it is helpful to know what features on your phone can help you plan all aspects of your next adventure and add to your enjoyment while you're on the road. According to a recent U.S. Cellular survey, 68 percent of smartphone owners used their smartphone to assist them while traveling.

Knowing how to use your iPhone 6 or iPad Air 2 to book flights, download guidebooks, navigate a new city or stay entertained during a long car ride can greatly enhance and simplify life, which is why U.S. Cellular wants to show Bangor area residents the tips and tricks of using their devices to the fullest.

BANGOR - The Challenger Learning Center of Maine will celebrate Space Day with its 6th Annual Open House on Wednesday, April 29 from 3:30 to 6 p.m. at its 30 Venture Way location in Bangor. The event is free and open to the public.

Once again this year, there are numerous presentations and activities planned. Special Guest Brian Ewenson, the 2010 Cherri Brinley Space Educator of the Year, returns to Challenger to make a new presentation about living and working together on board the International Space Station (at 4:30 p.m.). Earlier in the day, Ewenson will appear at the Samuel L. Wagner School in Winterport, where he will make his presentation to the entire student body. "Each year, we select a school for Brian to visit that has demonstrated a real commitment to both the Challenger program and to science education," Executive Director Susan Jonason stated. "We're excited to present Brian at the Wagner school."

PORTLAND For the second year in a row, U.S. Cellular is hosting casting calls for the hit ABC show 'Shark Tank' in three cities, providing small business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs from across the country three new opportunities to achieve their business aspirations in the upcoming seventh season of the Emmy Award-winning show. One of these casting calls is taking place in Portland in July.

'We are thrilled to collaborate with Shark Tank' for our second casting call tour and give our customers and people from across the country the chance to get their businesses off of the ground,' said Matt Kasper, director of sales for U.S. Cellular in New England.

Maine Robotics opens new office in Downtown Orono

Written by PR

ORONO Maine Robotics has moved from its home office to new space at 30 Main Street in Orono. The tech oriented non-profit has, for the past 10 years, worked to expand the number of schools, teachers and students who participate in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) but has been limited in its growth by a lack of space.

Since opening its doors in 2004, Maine Robotics has offered the Maine FIRST LEGO League competition, the Maine Robot Track Meets, youth and adult workshops and the ever-growing summer technology camps. In the past decade, Maine Robotics has worked with over 11,500 adults, children and youth to move STEM ahead in the State of Maine. Each year sees a growth over the year before. A decade ago, 440 people were enrolled, but that number has grown to over 1,700 people this past year.

BANGOR As spring begins later this month, it is the perfect time to get outside and enjoy some fresh air. And if you take your smartphone with you, you can add to your enjoyment by reading a great book or even catching up on your favorite TV shows. According to a recent U.S. Cellular survey, nearly one third of smartphone owners said they have watched TV on their phone, and one in five said they have read a book on their phone.

Are you interested in using your phone for entertainment, or are you looking for more information on how to get more out of your device this spring? Devices such as the iPhone 6 and Samsung Galaxy S 5 can provide entertainment on the go, and U.S. Cellular wants to show Bangor area residents the tips and tricks of using these devices to the fullest.
