Monsters and meth Fiend'

Debut novel offers fresh take on zombies

As with any art form, trends play a big part in the literary realm. Whenever a genre or subject sees a surge in popularity, more and more authors jump into the fray. This is a mixed blessing at best; while some writers have something new and unique to add to a subject, many others are simply along for the ride, attempting to cash in on something that has achieved a certain level of cultural prominence.

The paranormal has seen such a surge in recent years. Wizards and vampires have had their respective moments in the sun, while a current pop-lit darling is the idea of the zombie. Now, with such a wealth of material out there, it can be difficult for an author to put any kind of personal stamp on the walking dead.

The quick and the dead World War Z'

Film offers waves of zombies, little else

As a critic, there are movies that you look forward to because you think they are going to be good and movies that you dread because you think they are going to be bad. There are always a couple of films in every season that have the stink of failure about them. Sometimes they are poorly conceived, other times they are decent projects torpedoed by bad personnel and/or financial decisions.

I've been very vocal about my misgivings regarding 'World War Z,' Brad Pitt's pet zombie action movie based on the 2005 Max Brooks novel. Everything I had heard cost overruns, multiple rewrites, a last-minute replacement ending indicated that this would be a misfire or even an outright flop.

Star-crossed lovers (and zombies)

Warm Bodies' strikes balance between humor and horror

Anyone who has gone to the movies over the past few years has seen the explosion in zombie movies. Hollywood's recent fascination with the genre has led to a glut of entertainment featuring the walking dead. Some of these movies have treated the subject with humor, others with deadly seriousness. But until now, none have used the genre as a foundation for romantic comedy.

If you're a zombie fan, chances are that 'Warm Bodies' piqued your interest. It's a new take on a genre that has been rapidly descending into the realm of the clich. It's a new take and quite a good one at that.

Calling all zombies

PROSPECT The Friends of Fort Knox are beginning to ramp up for their annual Halloween event, Fright at the Fort, and are seeking additional volunteers.

Volunteers are being sought to shuffle through the dark passageways of the fort as terrifying zombies during one of Maine's largest Halloween events. Volunteers unable to muster the appropriate ghoulish spirit may help out by serving as group tour guides, makeup artists or security helpers.
