Tarantino's latest a stylish, violent Western

Considering his seeming ubiquity in the pop culture landscape since bursting onto the scene with the one-two punch of 'Reservoir Dogs' and 'Pulp Fiction' in the early 1990s, it's a little surprising that Quentin Tarantino has only directed eight films.
(Well by his count, anyway. Depending on how you choose to categorize the two-volume 'Kill Bill' or the 'Death Proof' half of 'Grindhouse,' you could argue that this latest is actually his ninth.)

'The Hateful Eight' is Tarantino's newest work; once again, he's paying homage to a beloved genre in this case, the Western. The director (who also wrote the screenplay) provides himself an abundance of opportunities for sweeping shots and extreme violence just the sort of combination that allows Tarantino's vision to shine brightest.

Age before beauty Navel Gazing'

Book offers humorous, genuine take on growing older

Getting older is one of those realities that we're all forced to face eventually. No matter how mightily we might struggle against it, the passage of time is an unavoidable inevitability. Plenty of people have put pen to paper in an effort to voice the complexity of their feelings regarding their mortality. Many of these meditations are built on strength and sadness and seriousness. Others strive to see the humor in it all.

You can probably guess on which side Michael Ian Black's latest book falls.

2016 Cold Weather Driving Tips

Editor's Note: This story ran in January 2014; it has been updated.

For about half the year we have to drive in snowy, icy weather. But every year it seems like we have to relearn how to do it I think it really comes down to an intense desire to never have to drive in such a mess again, so we suppress the memories. Whatever the reason, tips about driving in icy conditions are always handy.

Slow down. The biggest issue with driving in snow is that the speed at which you can lose control of your vehicle is much lower than in nice conditions. Stopping takes more time, accelerating takes more time everything takes more time. So whether you're pulling out into traffic or following another vehicle, make sure you have plenty of room for the maneuver.

Kids n' Kops trading cards promoting healthy messages for youths
BANGOR/ORONO The Bangor and University of Maine police departments have launched a new Kids n' Kops trading card program intended to raise awareness about bullying and substance abuse prevention among elementary and middle school youngsters.
The series of 14 trading cards features male and female UMaine student-athletes who play Division I sports at the state's flagship university. Members of the Bangor and UMaine police departments will distribute the cards at community events, including university athletic games at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor and on campus.
Youngsters can collect five cards and bring them to one of the two police departments for a free Kids n' Kops T-shirt and two tickets to a UMaine basketball game.

Best Christmas ever

In the early times, you go through the motions of many of the holidays with the kids: it's less for the kids and more for you. As they grow, they catch on to what's going on and begin to anticipate each holiday in question. And there will come a time when you hit the sweet spot that moment when they understand what's going on and are excited without getting crazy. This was that year.
Everything about the holiday season was awesome, from picking up the Christmas tree to putting up the lights. Everything was met with gasps and coos from the kids. One of my girls would walk around the house and wish everyone in the room 'Merry Christmas!' If no one was in the room, she'd address her stuffed animals, or the Christmas tree itself.

Patriots Progress Report 2015 Fourth Quarter

Once again, we reach the end of the NFL's regular season. After a brilliant first half, the New England Patriots struggled over the final eight. They finished at 12-4 their 2-2 record for the month included losses in their last two games against the Jets and the Dolphins.
It's safe to say that the Patriots as they stand currently are a different team than the one that was inspiring talk of another perfect regular season. On offense in particular, the team has struggled. Despite their losing streak, New England still landed a first-round bye, though they did cede the overall top seed to Denver.
It's playoff time, so the counter is reset to zero. However, if they keep playing the way they have over the past month, New England's time might be short.

Time Waster: 'Coloruid'

'Coloruid' is a challenging and unique color-based game. You have a certain number of moves depending on the level. You can select from five colors (blue, green, pink, yellow and orange) and use them to fill in other colors. What makes this game interesting is that there are physics at play, and the color blobs are not always static. They can ooze out of their designated spots, and when you fill in a color with a new one, each of the boxes shakes, and it can change up your playing field.
