Time Waster - Looming'

Minimalist games can be incredibly fun and challenging, and still have mood and atmosphere. As someone who has been playing games since text-based adventures, I'm well aware that it isn't graphics that make a game fun. 'Looming' once again proves that point.

With basically three colors (black, white and gray), you are transported to the world of Looming. You are alone, but you are not the first to come here. You read letters between persons named September (you) and January, your mysterious love. You have to collect artifacts, solve puzzles and ultimately find various ways out of Looming only to return again and again.

Time Waster - ZomboGems

Sometimes the tensest part of a horror movie is when a character is trying to do a mundane task that is made horribly complicated by panic. Like gassing up your car in the midst of a zombie attack. But with ZomboGems, they've added another level of complexity by adding the nonsensical need to match gems in order to fill your tank (the gems hold the gas, or some nonsense). Basically they were looking for an excuse to squish two games into one, and they did.

As you match gem colors by three or more, you shoot, or lob weapons at the oncoming hordes of zombies. In between pit stops, you can supposedly upgrade your vehicle, buy some items that make killing the zombies easier or gassing up faster. But the upgrade system feels terribly imbalanced you can't afford the good stuff and end up being walloped as you progress through the game. Basically forcing you to replay levels (such as they are) until you can buy better gear to beat that oncoming hoard. It isn't a deal-breaker, but it does get a little tedious especially considering how similar the levels are to begin with.

Time Waster - AdVenture Capitalist

Incremental games are all the rage now, and I have grown quite the soft spot for them in my time-wasting golden years. They allow you to micromanage as much as you like, and also just let the game go on its merry way for hours and even days, racking up points, candy - or, in this wonderful new iteration, money.

'AdVenture Capitalist' features you as a bright young up-and-comer making money in various fields starting as a humble lemonade stand, but making investments, purchasing new businesses and hiring on managers and eventually getting angel investors.

Time Waster - Pikr

This game is simply maddening. Simple and maddening. Also, no fun if you are color blind. It's debatable if it's fun when you can see colors, but you can see for yourself. Or maybe you can't see that's the thing. The whole game is about picking the one color that doesn't belong. Thing is, the differentiation is subtle off by the breath of a shade.

And sometimes you just can't see it.

Time Waster - Just Type This'

Typing games are a fun little diversion, but 'Just Type This' takes the challenge of being nimble on the keyboard to an entirely different level by adding videogame elements to the game play.

Yes, you type, but you are also avoiding falling blocks, spikes and missiles. And you still have to be quick and accurate something that is surprisingly difficult when you start to add a little pressure here and there. Timing is everything, especially when the aforementioned challenges are coming at you.

Time Waster - The Quiet Place

The internet is full of meaningless distractions, from endlessly checking emails, to clicking on every 'like,' '+1,' or other notification that flows through on social media. We take them with us wherever we go; our phones become our constant companions.

The quiet place aims to help you let go of that. It advises you visit without your phone's notifications on, turn your speakers on so you can hear the soothing music and enter full-screen mode. And just read the text that you control with the space bar and let go.

Time Waster - Shadowscape'

'Shadowscape' is a fast-paced and fun platform game. You are trapped in a shadowy world. There are clues to a different landscape all around you, but you have to escape. And escape is difficult.

This game is both fun and challenging, walking that line between keeping you going and rage-quitting. And it's such a fine line. Everything about this game amps up the intensity, from the music to the stark shadowy background. You move fast, and you have to be careful because you can die in many different ways. But that's OK, because moving helps you earn new lives.

Time Waster - SolarMax 2'

It's a beautiful, vibrant and colorful universe out there, and it's your job to stamp out anyone who differs from you and conquer all known worlds!

That's right, the world is not enough. You are trying to dominate entire star systems and take over key strategic weapons to destroy your enemies. And in all fairness, they are trying to do the same to you.
