What do you expect?

Are you or someone you know expecting? It is such an exciting time in life. There is so much to think about and worry about while pregnant, and there is one question I get as soon as a client finds out that they are pregnant: 'Can I color my hair while pregnant?'

As a hairdresser, I am certainly a fill in therapist once in a while, but I am not a doctor. I always tell my clients that they should always consult with their doctor on this issue. Many recommend avoiding just about everything the first trimester. I believe coloring your hair during pregnancy is safe and that your hair can look great during your pregnancy. But remember, this is my opinion alone.

Party Hair 2013

The holidays are here, and that means parties, parties, parties! I get questions all the time on ways to style hair at home for that upcoming party. I think that this is a great excuse to make time for you. Give yourself a treat and make an appointment with your stylist to have your hair and makeup done for the party. In some situations, however, this may not be possible, so if you have to do it yourself, here are a few tips.

The key to success is to keep it simple. Don't try to make it perfect, and don't try to fight what it is your hair really wants to do. I suggest getting yourself some hot rollers if you don't already have some. Hot rollers are my secret weapon at home. When I want to style my hair quickly and easily with guaranteed results, I grab the hot rollers. They do the work for you. Other supplies to have on hand are bobby pins, hair tie, styling product (gel or mousse), hairspray and accessories (i.e. pretty clips or a headband).

Who doesn't like a little sparkle?

I spent the whole weekend after Thanksgiving decorating my house for Christmas. I always get excited to dig out all of my things and put them out to enjoy again. Each year I like to change it up a little bit, and I'm always looking to add more sparkle everywhere. As I was admiring the sparkle I was pulling out of my Christmas storage boxes I thought to myself, 'Everyone needs more sparkle in their hair.'

This is the time of year that everything dries out and lacks moisture. I encourage you to add some sparkle to your hair with hair color. There are so many options to achieve this, and it doesn't mean a drastic change in your current look. It just means shiny and luxurious hair that will have everyone staring. You can get sparkle in your hair many ways. Maybe you just need to stop putting yourself on the bottom of your to-do list and call to make an appointment with your hairdresser to get your color touched up. Using a demi-permanent color (lasts about four weeks and is a deposit-only color) can add extreme hydration and shine to your hair without really changing your color, unless you're looking for a more drastic change. There is even the option of just adding a clear color to your hair. I call it a 'top-coat.' Think about what a top-coat of nail polish does for your nails and how shiny it makes it. This is what a clear color can do for your hair.

Dry enough for you?

Summer always goes by way too fast for me, and even though I love fall here in Maine, it is hard to say goodbye to warm summer nights and days at the beach. There is one area that I know is still telling us all how much fun you had this summer in the sun, and that is your hair. Is it looking a little dry, maybe a little too blonde? Summer sun, heat and humidity all take a toll on our hair. Don't fret; there are many options for you.

The biggest thing I see right now is hair that is just a little too bleached out from the sun. Even you brunettes suffer from this. I recommend adding some darker color back into your hair through foils to keep the dimension in your hair alive and well. Remember, we live in a three-dimensional world and your hair color should be too. When I say darker, I simply mean to add any color darker than what you have currently. This is also a fun way to play and maybe add a little bit of a color that you haven't tried. Fall is here, so bring on the shades of red, gold and orange. Go ahead, try it!

Do you have what it takes?

Many people tell me that they think my job would be fun. I can't argue with that. I believe that I have the best job in the world. I love that something that is a simple as a hairstyle can change someone's or just brighten their day.

These are the reasons I chose cosmetology. But as wonderful as my job is, it also comes with a lot of things that many don't realize. Here are a few questions to ponder before signing up to become a licensed cosmetologist.

Take the leap

Have you ever just gone out on a limb and tried something totally new? I think we all get too comfortable in life with our day to day routine. Summer is almost over; before we know it, we will be dreaming of warm summer nights as we hibernate for winter. I say try something new before we are stuck in our house trying to keep warm. I recently have done that myself and I am telling you first hand, that it feels great!

I am a hairdresser and have worked in the business now for over 10 years. I am constantly encouraging people to step out of their comfort zone with their hair. I want them to trust me and take a chance. In the big scheme of things, what do you really have to lose? It is hair, it grows back, and think of how fun it could be trying new styles while it is growing and changing. Don't listen to what everyone else tells you to do with your hair (yes, I mean your man and your family).  Think about what you would do if you just had the guts to go for it.
