The Sports Edge The most wonderful time

The recent cool, damp weekend was a friendly reminder that the dog days of summer will soon be making way for fall and everything that goes with that in Maine. Some tend to view the autumn as a harbinger of what follows; I prefer to take a deep breath of that chilly morning air and celebrate what I think of as the best our state has to offer.

Say it ain't so, Tom

The Tom Brady saga appears to finally be over, ending not with a bang but with a whimper.

The future Hall of Famer opted to take his four game vacation and move on with his life, perhaps understanding that as time went on, this case became less about him and more about the ongoing power struggle between the commissioner's office and the NFL Players Association.

How Donald Trump took on the NFL

WASHINGTON More than 30 years ago, Donald Trump bought a franchise in the upstart United States Football League. He then led his fellow owners to sue the NFL in a high-stakes antitrust case.

The head-on challenge and his ownership of the New Jersey Generals was an early testing ground for the swashbuckling approach that the celebrity businessman-turned-Republican presidential candidate has brought to his 2016 campaign.

'Donald was the big, crazy-spending owner, and the NFL guys were scared to death of him,' said Bill Tatham Jr., an owner of the USFL's Arizona Outlaws who came to admire Trump's tactics.

NFL Postseason Preview Conference Championships

Another week gone, another four teams eliminated from the hunt for the Lombardi Trophy.

At the beginning of this postseason, there were 12 teams striving for one of those coveted spots in that biggest of big games, the Super Bowl. Now, with the Indianapolis Colts, the San Diego Chargers, the New Orleans Saints and the Carolina Panthers having gone down to defeat over the weekend, just four remain.

NFL Postseason Preview: Wild Card Round

After 17 weeks of regular season football, the NFL has arrived at yet another postseason. 30 teams began the season with hopes of contending for the Lombardi Trophy; 18 of those teams have already reached the end of the line. Only 12 contenders remain; a dozen squads left to contend for a spot in Super Bowl XLVIII (that's 48 for all you non-Romans out there).

It's a significant accomplishment to make it this far, to be surebut the journey is far from over.
