“This ain’t your mama’s solo Chris Ross record,” Ross told me last week of “Over Lonesome,” the second album recorded by Chris Ross & the North.  The disc is set for release on June 2 and will coincide with an album release concert scheduled for that evening at Bar Harbor’s historic Criterion Theatre.

After nearly four decades as a band, Loverboy lead singer Mike Reno says the group is taking a DIY approach to getting their music to fans. Instead of relying on record companies, Loverboy is releasing a new song each month for free through their website. The latest is “Stop the Rain” and it’s accompanied by a fan-produced video that is out of this world. Mike Reno checked in last week to discuss the present, past and future of Loverboy.

Phish rip it up on ‘St Louis ‘93’

Still wondering what the fuss is about regarding Phish? The band’s newly issued six-CD box set “St. Louis ’93” explains it as well as anything. The collection comprises two complete concerts, performed four months apart, at the 1,700-seat capacity American Theater in St. Louis.

Last October, on the occasion of his 90th birthday, Chuck Berry’s social media accounts released an image of the man, based on a 1969 photograph by Jim Marshall, announcing his first newly-recorded album in nearly four decades. I had hoped Chuck would still be with us when the album was eventually released this year, but it wasn’t meant to be.
