Fourth of July fund tops $32K

Volunteers needed to help staff parade and fireworks

BANGOR Area individuals and companies met the call and contributed nearly $13,000 last week to help fund this year's parade, fireworks and charity concert. The latest tally brings the total raised to $32,500, with Bangor Federal Credit Union and C&L Aviation contributing $10,000 between both companies to help exceed this year's fundraising goal with just 10 days to go before the annual Independence Day celebration.

With the holiday creep happening earlier and earlier in November, Black Friday might not be what it used to. Although the traditional shopping day is still strong in Maine due to state law that prohibits retail stores with over 5,000 square feet from opening on the holiday, some stores will be open across the state on Thanksgiving Day, including pharmacies like Walgreens and Rite Aid that, despite their store size, fall under one of 34 exemptions under Maine statutes.
