Kibbles and Picks 2022 – Week 12

Well now … that was MUCH better.

Granted, Stella gained another game on me, leaving her just a single game behind for the season, but it’s hard for me to complain about a 10-4 week, even if Stella’s 11-3 did me one better. Regardless, it’s a damn sight better than the abysmal showings we put up in Week 10.

Stella will have her shot at retaking the lead; the full slate of 16 games led us to differ on six. Certainly not the largest number of contests where we’ve been at odds, but far from the fewest. And frankly, she’s got a real shot at surging.

Kibbles and Picks 2022 – Week 11

Well … they can’t all be winners.

Week 10 served as a wonderful reminder of why we don’t place actual money on these games. Stella and I both had utterly abysmal showings, with neither of us cracking .500. However, Stella’s performance was slightly less putrid than mine – her 6-8 record for the week was enough to actually gain back a game, as I managed a lowly 5-9.

What that means, however, is that I am still in the lead after 10 weeks of football. Sure, there are seven more to go – plenty of time for me to resume my accustomed place looking up at her – but for now, in this moment, I am winning.

Feels good, man.

As for Week 11, we’re once again looking at a fairly limited oppositional slate, with Stella and I at odds on just five of the week’s contests. Not enough for any drastic moves, but really, all I’m hoping for is to manage better than .500.

Kibbles and Picks 2022 - Week 10

I’ll be honest – this is not at all what I expected.

I figured after tying everything up last week, Week 9 would be the beginning of my long slow descent into yet another loss. Instead, I have one of my better weeks, putting up a 10-3 record. In addition, three of those wins came at Stella’s expense. That’s right – I’m back in the lead!

Will it last? Who can say? It might stick around for a bit, though, since Stella and I are at odds on just five of the week’s 13 contests. Doesn’t allow for any crazy big swings, but even so – if Stella’s right on four of those, we’re tied again. A sweep and she retakes the lead. Not crazy likely, but stranger things have happened.

Kibbles and Picks 2022 – Week 9

And just like that – it’s all tied up.

Thanks to a solid performance by me and a so-so one from Stella, we enter the midway(ish) point of the season in a dead heat. It’s a brand-new start for both of us as we head toward the season’s back half, where things are only going to get more unpredictable as teams begin to make their respective playoff pushes.

Despite the bye weeks leaving us with just 13 contests this week, Stella and I still managed to find our share of disagreement. Indeed, we’re at odds on nearly half of Week 9’s games – six in all – and we’ve both made some interesting choices to get there.

Kibbles and Picks 2022 – Week 8

Well s—t.

Just like that, not only is my slim lead gone, but Stella has leapt out to a two-game advantage of her own. She had a very respectable 9-5 record in this week of weirdness. I, on the other hand, stumbled to 5-9 – my second consecutive sub-.500 record. I suppose the only real surprise here is that it took until roughly midseason for her to retake the top spot. One imagines that it is all downhill from here.

We’ll do a deeper reflection come next week, when we’re actually past the halfway point, but for now, let’s just agree that I remain a prognostication masochist. I am apparently the world’s greatest proponent of canine socialism, as I clearly enjoy being publicly owned by a dog.

Until then, we’ve got Week 8. Stella and I differ on just six of the week’s 15 contests, so barring abject dominance, we won’t see any massive moves one way or the other. Of course, Stella’s not worried about big moves – she’s content to simply beat me in fits and starts, slowly but steadily increasing her lead.

Kibbles and Picks 2022 – Week 7

And so it begins.

Look, we all knew it was too good to be true. The likelihood of me maintaining a lead over the course of the season was minimal. Granted, I didn’t think I’d crap the bed quite so thoroughly quite so soon – 6-8 is not good – but thankfully, Stella struggled a bit as well, going off at 8-6. Still, that sliced my lead in half, and as we approach the season’s halfway point, I anticipate that that trend will continue.

We’re into the byes, so we don’t have quite as many games to choose from, but Stella and I still managed to be at odds on six of the week’s contests. Not a ton of great games to choose from, to be honest, but I know Stella is taking it seriously because she didn’t pick against the Patriots; trolling is trolling, but the Bears are bad.

First up, in yet another yawner of a Thursday night contest, we’ve got New Orleans heading into the desert to take on the Cardinals. I’ve got the Saints winning, which feels like a bit of a reach, particularly when there’s a very real chance that Taysom Hill will actually be playing quarterback, but that Arizona squad seems to be very much in disarray. This is less a pick for the Saints than it is against the Cards. Stella acknowledges the swirling chaos in Arizona, but also thinks that they’re due for a big offensive breakout. She’s counting on the return of DeAndre Hopkins from suspension to help push the passing attack forward, even if he isn’t 100% yet. She also likes the Saints to make a few unforced errors along the way.

Kibbles and Picks 2022 - Week 6

Honestly, I didn’t even want to write this week’s entry, because I didn’t want to jinx anything, but I am pathologically incapable of disappointing the tens of readers who look forward to this feature every Thursday.

But yes, it’s true – I’m winning. Still.

I even expanded my lead a little bit, courtesy of a blazing hot 12-4 record. But only a little bit – Stella was certainly no slouch, coming in at 10-6. But hey, a lead is a lead is a lead, and as of right now, I’ve got four games on my adorable little adversary, which is the largest advantage I’ve had in literally years. Can I keep it up? Probably not, but who can say?

We’re into the byes, so there are fewer contests each week. That didn’t stop us from winding up at odds in six of the week’s 14 games. It’s not a huge differential, but it’s enough where if Stella has a hot one, my lead will evaporate. I hope that doesn’t happen.

It will probably happen.

Kibbles and Picks 2022 – Week 5

Can it be? Am I … still in the lead?

Not only that, but I actually gained a game thanks to my best week of the young season – 11-5. Of course, Stella went 10-6, so it’s not like I opened up that much more of an advantage. Still, we’re a quarter (ish – stupid 17th game) through the season and I’m winning – I’ll take it!

Now, that can still change in a hurry. Such is the mercurial nature of Kibbles and Picks. It likely won’t be a huge swing this week, as Stella and I are at odds on just six of the week’s 16 contests, but one never knows. And it’s enough so that, if one of us really nails it, the other will be left with quite a hole from which to dig themselves out.

Kibbles and Picks 2022 – Week 4

I’m back in the lead, baby!

Sure, it’s just by one game, with our 10 Week 3 games in opposition leading to a mere two-game swing in the season-long standings, but you know what? That swing turns Stella’s lead into my lead and I will take it – I don’t get many opportunities to feel like a winner in this little competition, so I’ll embrace the small victories whenever I find them.

This week, we’re looking at seven games. Now, Stella and I are both pretty tired, so we’re going to go quick and dirty this time through. And we really mean it this time, not like last week, when we said we’d go short and then didn’t actually go short.

Kibbles and Picks 2022 – Week 3

And so it begins.

With Stella’s correct call on the final game of Week 2 – Philadelphia over Minnesota – she ended the week with a 10-6 record, one better than my own 9-7. Hence, she is in the lead, a lead I don’t expect that she will relinquish for the rest of the season. It’s just a question of how deep the hole gets, you know?

Probably pretty deep, if history is any indicator.

That being said, there’s potential for a big week here – maybe even one of our biggest ever – because Stella and I are at odds on TEN of the week’s 16 contests. If I (unlikely) or she (much more plausible) should go on a big run, there’s a big lead that could be established. Sure, it’ll probably wind up being like 6-4 or whatever, but hey, if one of us goes 8-2 or 9-1, it’s going to be one hell of a hill to climb (apologies for the mixed metaphors – deep holes, tall hills, it’s chaos).
