FARMINGTON The University of Maine at Farmington is proud to present non-fiction, environmental author Kathryn Miles as the next reader in its celebrated Visiting Writers Series. Miles will read from her work at 7:30 p.m., Feb. 11, in The Landing in the UMF Olsen Student Center. The reading is free and open to the public and will be followed by a signing by the author.

According to author Janine DeBaise, Miles's non-fiction work is known for combining the scientific facts of a story with a good narrative that entertains while educating. Miles's 'Superstorm: Nine Days Inside Hurricane Sandy' (Dutton 2014), is the first complete, moment-by-moment account of the largest Atlantic storm system ever recorded. In this riveting account, she takes the reader inside the enormous storm and the people whose lives were forever changed.

HAMPDEN Primary care is the foundation for maintaining a healthy community, and there are many children who may not have regular access to a primary care provider. Recognizing this issue, leaders at Eastern Maine Medical Center and RSU 22 came together to create the RSU 22 School-Based Health Center. The center is a place where students can be seen for health concerns, while staying right at Hampden Academy.

"This initiative stems from a need that RSU 22 staff members were seeing,' says James Raczek, MD, FAAFP, EMMC senior vice president and chief medical officer. 'Upon being seen, our providers will work with the patient's primary care providers to ensure the visit is entered into their medical records. It's a real benefit to the students, their parents and the community.'

ORONO Laurie Smukler and Robert McDonald will be performing at the Minsky Recital Hall in Orono on Feb. 7 at 3 p.m.

'Our all-Bartk program includes the First Rhapsody, and both the Violin and Piano Sonatas; No. 1 and No. 2. The Rhapsody was dedicated to the great violinist Josef Szigeti, who was good friends with Bartk. It is full of folk melody and is a real virtuosic show piece. The sonatas were written within a year of each other, both for the fiery and beautiful woman violinist Jelly D'Aranyi, with whom Bartk was smitten,' said Laurie Smukler in a release. 'The relationship with the older Bartk did not develop into a romance, but the two did perform the sonatas together. The pieces themselves are full of romantic lyricism, intensity, exoticism, and rhythmic excitement, in addition to Bartk's trademark use of folk music.
