AUGUSTA - The Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry's Maine Forest Service is requesting people be extremely careful with any outdoor fires. To date, there have been nearly 80 Maine wildfires that have burned a total of 120 acres and threatened several homes. Most of these fires are caused by people being careless while burning outdoors. Either the fire gets away from them, or they fail to fully extinguish the fire and it rekindles the next day.

Maine Forest Service releases new poster

student-made poster spreads the word about Maine's out-of-state firewood ban

AUGUSTA The Maine Forest Service has a brand-new poster, created by an Augusta-area vocational student, designed to get out the word about Maine's ban on out-of-state firewood.

The new poster features an out-of-state 'bugmobile' graphic by Kalyn Van Valkenburgh, who graduated this year from Erskine Academy and the Capital Area Technical Center in Augusta. The poster is a strong reminder that out-of-state firewood can carry unwanted invasive and dangerous insects, such as the emerald ash borer (EAB) and the Asian longhorned beetle (ALB), into Maine.

Time for landowners to be aware of bug movement

AUGUSTA This past winter was a good one for an invasive forest insect threatening Maine's hemlocks, and this spring is a good time for home and land owners, particularly those along Maine's coast, to be aware of the potential for spreading it.

The hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) has been moving inland and north along Maine's coastline. In addition to the recently-reported infestations found in Alfred and Mount Desert Island, the invasive insect now has been found in Arundel, Biddeford and Kennebunk, according officials with the Maine Forest Service, under the Maine Department of Conservation.

'The sites are all York County, all coastal and where we expected to find it,' MFS Forest Entomologist Allison Kanoti said.
