Film Favorites: 12 for 2012

A look back at some of this year's highlights

This is not intended to be a traditional 'Best Of' list. Nor is it intended to be comprehensive truthfully, one or more as-yet-unseen late-year releases might well bound their way up the ladder (I'm looking at you 'Django Unchained' and 'Zero Dark Thirty' and yes, you too 'Les Miserables.')

No, this list is instead a look back at some of my favorite films of the year. Are there 'better' films out there that didn't make the cut? Absolutely. These are just a handful of films some great, some less so that I really enjoyed in 2012.

Staying in the loop

Looper' a fresh, fascinating take on time travel

Every once in a while, a film comes along that takes a tired cinematic trope and breathes new life into it. These new and interesting takes on old ideas are relatively rare why have a new take when old takes make plenty of money?

Take the new film 'Looper' for instance. The latest offering from writer/director Rian Johnson takes one of the classic science fiction foundations (time travel) and takes it in a direction that we've never seen onscreen. The result is a smart and challenging film that transcends its speculative origins.

A few fine films for fall

With the shift in the seasons, we also get a bit of a shift in our cinematic offerings. After a summer that featured blockbuster after blockbuster, a season of nine-figure box office dynamos led by all-time high-grossing superhero movies such as 'The Avengers' and 'The Dark Knight Rises,' things are calming down a bit this fall.

That's not to imply that there aren't some potentially great films coming out over the coming months.

The fall of 2012 has an awful lot to offer. You've got the triumphant return of a great director with Paul Thomas Anderson's 'The Master.' You've got a once-in-a-generation talent like Daniel Day-Lewis taking on the title role in the biopic 'Lincoln.' There's melodrama and intrigue, goofy animation and gritty science fiction. It looks like there could be some really good movies coming our way.

And also 'Twilight.'
