Life's marathon

I just completed a half marathon and now I hurt. So why do I do it? Why do I put myself through the pain? The answer is simple, yet apparently contradictory. I run because it makes me feel good. I like what it does for my body but mostly I like what it does for my brain. I swear that running clears out brain crud. Many of my most creative and best ideas came to me during a run. I also like to push myself beyond what I think I'm capable of.

BANGOR - Cindy Michaels, news anchor of ABC 7 and Fox Bangor is used to being in the public eye, but outside of work she admits she's a very private person. That all changed a few weeks ago when Michaels learned her brother, 58-year-old John Sovis, was diagnosed with bile duct cancer.

"It took me a week to stop crying because you're just driving and you think 'Oh my God, my brother is going to die.' I know it's clich to say but you don't think it's going to happen to you," said Michaels. "As I was calling different hospitals, I realized it [treatment] wasn't a cheap endeavor, and I said I've got to have a fundraiser."

BANGOR - In the midst of autumn color and cooling temperatures, Rape Response Services announces its Annual Auction. This distinctive event provides an evening of fun, laughter, conversation, delicious hors d'oeuvres, lively music and spirited bidding wars. Among the many items to be auctioned are an autographed Stephen King book, Josh Beckett autographed baseball donated by the Boston Red Sox, and a beautiful queen-sized quilt handcrafted by the Zonta Club of Bangor.

All proceeds will go to Rape Response Services to support individuals impacted by sexual violence and efforts to prevent all aspects of this violent crime. A recent study found that nearly one in five Maine residents reports that they have been the victim of rape or attempted rape during their lifetime; roughly 14,000 Maine residents may be the victim of rape or unwanted sexual activity during any 12-month period.
