Thanking the Academy: 2013 Oscar predictions

It's that time again, time for the Hollywood elite to roll out the red carpet and give themselves a few pats on the back. That's right - it's the Academy Awards.

As someone who spends a lot of time at the movies, this is one of my favorite times of the year. Awards such as the Oscars are great because they inspire conversation who do you think will win, who do you think should win, which movies did you see, which movies did you like, which did you hate and on and on and on.

So I'm once more putting my prognostication skills on the line. These are my picks for some of the big awards come Sunday night. Again, these aren't necessarily the people and films that I think should win. They're the ones I think will win. Sometimes, they're the same. More often, they're not.

Film Favorites: 12 for 2012

A look back at some of this year's highlights

This is not intended to be a traditional 'Best Of' list. Nor is it intended to be comprehensive truthfully, one or more as-yet-unseen late-year releases might well bound their way up the ladder (I'm looking at you 'Django Unchained' and 'Zero Dark Thirty' and yes, you too 'Les Miserables.')

No, this list is instead a look back at some of my favorite films of the year. Are there 'better' films out there that didn't make the cut? Absolutely. These are just a handful of films some great, some less so that I really enjoyed in 2012.

Portrait of a president - Lincoln'

Spielberg, Day-Lewis bring history to life

Every once in a while, moviegoers are treated to a perfect cinematic storm, a confluence of talent that all but assures excellence. It is a rare and wonderful thing to see unfailingly exceptional actors, writers, director and subject matter come together in the same place at the same time. When they do, the result is true movie magic.

If you're lucky, the result is a movie like 'Lincoln.'

A few fine films for fall

With the shift in the seasons, we also get a bit of a shift in our cinematic offerings. After a summer that featured blockbuster after blockbuster, a season of nine-figure box office dynamos led by all-time high-grossing superhero movies such as 'The Avengers' and 'The Dark Knight Rises,' things are calming down a bit this fall.

That's not to imply that there aren't some potentially great films coming out over the coming months.

The fall of 2012 has an awful lot to offer. You've got the triumphant return of a great director with Paul Thomas Anderson's 'The Master.' You've got a once-in-a-generation talent like Daniel Day-Lewis taking on the title role in the biopic 'Lincoln.' There's melodrama and intrigue, goofy animation and gritty science fiction. It looks like there could be some really good movies coming our way.

And also 'Twilight.'
