Kibbles and Picks 2019 - Week 16

Holy s—t – I might actually win this thing.

It’s not that Stella is underperforming – her 10-6 record in Week 15 was solid – so much as that I am on fire, putting up a 13-3 to add three more games to my lead. This action puts me at four games up with two weeks to play; I don’t believe that I have had this kind of advantage this far into the season since Year Two of this grand experiment (better known as the one year I actually won the damned thing).

I’m not counting my chickens though – there’s still plenty of time for me to blow it. And with us at odds on six of the weekend’s contests, Stella could certainly erase some or all of my lead with some good Week 16 luck.

Kibbles and Picks 2019 - Week 11

That was … bad.

I came out on top in Week 10, but my 6-7 record is hardly worth bragging about. Stella did just one game worse at 5-8, which doubles my lead and put me two games up on the season. Again – it’s a net win, but there’s nothing to be proud of about any of this.

Let’s hope that we see a rebound here in Week 11. We’re at odds on half-a-dozen of the week’s 14 contests. I’d call it an opportunity for one of us to make a big move, but the reality is that neither one of us has truly shined this season. For now, let’s just assume that this NFL season has been less predictable than usual thus far and this week will be the week that we start to lock it in.

Kibbles and Picks 2019 - Week 9

Things are getting serious.

No change in the overall picture – I maintain my three-game cushion – but that’s only because Stella and I matching killer weeks, with each of us going 12-3. I can only hope I won’t need to maintain this pace, because I don’t believe I have it in me.

Week 9 is another slate where we don’t disagree all that much. We’re at odds in just six of the 14 contests; not a lot. Still, if one of us happens to hit, we could nevertheless make a move.

Kibbles and Picks 2019 - Week 8

Now we’re talking.

Thanks to a clutch 11-3 record this week, I’ve added to my season lead over Stella. I gained two games, courtesy of Stella’s still-quite-good 9-5; my lead is now up to three. It has been some time since I approached the midseason mark with a lead; I’m just crossing my fingers that I’m able to maintain.

There shouldn’t be a ton of movement this week – Stella and I differ on just six of the week’s 15-contest slate. Of course, there’s nothing to say that one of us won’t go five-for-six and make a four-game move.

Kibbles and Picks 2019 - Week 5

Another week, another game gained.

Neither Stella nor I had a particularly great week last week, but mine was just a little bit better – 9-6 to her 8-7. This means that I add another game to my lead, now up to three on the season.

Obviously, I know that this is all an illusion and that Stella will almost certainly rise up and crush me. I imagine her eventual victory may be rendered all the sweeter by the fact that she allowed me to have some modicum of hope before my ultimate demolition.

Will this be the week that she takes the power back? She certainly has the opportunity; the two of us are in disagreement on eight games this week – more than half the slate. It’s certainly enough for someone to make a big move; we’ll just have to see if that’s the case.

Kibbles and Picks 2019 - Week 4

Week 3 was all about maintaining the status quo. Stella and I put up identical 11-5 records and so saw no movement in the overall race, with me maintaining a two-game lead.

One would think that 11-5 would be good enough to make some progress, but this is Kibbles and Picks – there’s no such thing as good enough. With a sharp like Stella in the mix, I can’t let my guard down for a second, or else she’ll smell my weakness and pounce.

This week, we’re looking at seven head-to-head matchups. So hey – looks like there’s going to be some movement for sure. What that means is yet to be seen, but I’ll admit to some nervousness.

Stella, as always, remains unconcerned.

All told, it wasn’t that tough to predict what was going to happen in the divisional round. The top seeds won and advanced. Try as we might to talk ourselves into thinking otherwise (like I did with Philadelphia and Stella did with Indianapolis), more often than not, it’s a pair of one- and two-seeds playing for the right to go to the Super Bowl.

Stella and I both went 3-1 in our divisional picks. We were both right on the Rams and the Patriots, while I had Kansas City and she had New Orleans. This leaves me with a lead of a single game.

However, as we differ on both conference championship games, the possibility exists for her to leapfrog me and surge into the lead going into the Super Bowl.

Man – where was this a month ago?

I had the best week of the season – for either of us – putting up a 14-2 record. I went five-for-five in head-to-head picks; Stella went 9-7.

And for all that, my sole reward is the fact that I cut her final margin of victory to nine. Sure, I got beaten in this Godforsaken competition again – for the fourth year in a row and for the fifth time out of six years – but at least it wasn’t by double digits this time.

Stella has once more dominated Kibbles and Picks with an adorable iron paw, illustrating to me the ongoing foolishness of engaging in this exercise. I am forced to admit yet again that my dog is better at picking football games than I am.

Final Standings

Allen’s season record: 154-100-2

Stella’s season record: 163-91-2
