The Havener Sisters'

A delightful adventure in historic Maine

Ardeana Hamlin recently released 'The Havener Sisters' ($16.95, Islandport Press), which details the lives of triplets China, India and Persia who in their mid-50s find that they have to sell their late father's boat and reinvent their lives. For China, this goes beyond just moving to a smaller house in Fort Point with her two sisters. It also involves learning what it means to live apart if only for a time from her identical sisters.

Various ways to shop for the holiday season

The Christmas creep has been happening for some time every year we note how early holiday decorations appear on shelves and Christmas carols begin to eke into the radio lineup. It is difficult to say how accurate these perceptions are, but it's certainly amped up by everyone weighing in on social media.

Time Waster - 21 Questions Wrong

Most games test your skill in some way and this is no different, but not in the way you'd think. It's a simple premise, you have to answer 21 questions, but you have to get them wrong in order to proceed. Being wrong is harder than you think. In order to get things really wrong, you still need to know the answer. If you don't, then your odds of having to restart the game increase dramatically.

This is amped up by the fast-pace of the game. You have mere seconds to select the incorrect answer and even though there are only two options the pressure is on.

Hello darkness, my old friend

When the time change hits you know it not so much from the surge of darkness as the surge of angry ranting on Facebook from frustrated parents. Frustrated that months of detailed scheduling and bedtime routines are flushed down the toilet by an antiquated system of time that makes sense to no one.

I rarely come out for or against anything in this column but this is it. The gloves are off. Let's pick a time and stick with it. If you want your extra hour? Keep it. If you like the extra daylight fine. Flip a coin, I don't care, but pick the one you want and stop messing with my brain. And my kids' brains.

Time Waster - CirculO'

'CirculO' is a physics puzzle game that, like all the great games, is deceptively simple. You are a solid color circle and you have to collect a number of hollow circles in each level to advance the game.

The play area is a circle, and your obstacles are circles with the occasional line. You use the left and right arrow keys to move and with that using nothing but momentum, timing and gravity have to overcome obstacles to get the ring you need to advance. With each ring, your play area expands obstacles remain; some static, some mobile. It's really rather challenging. But some are easier than others and can be solved.

That's just sick

Anyone who is not interested in hearing about kids who are sick should leave now. Seriously.

I thought I understood kids being sick. We've had a wide variety of illness in the house over the past four years, some involving ER trips, some involving various levels of ick. But this was new and long. Ever since school started the kids have had a linger cold. Outside of the usual ick, they were not troubled by this. Routines continued bus, school, home.
