King's Quest: Rubble without a Cause'

Second chapter short and rather dark

The first chapter of the new King's Quest series rightly wowed people with its stunning visuals, clever puzzles and whimsical characters and storytelling. The second chapter had a lot of expectations to live up to, and will have to be forgiven for not quite meeting them.

Skewed View - (12/23/15)

Things are festive all over downtown Bangor, with lights at night and garlands and banners during the day. Where can you see this festive tree? It's on a popular intersection bonus points if you can name the business! (Photo by Katy England).

Last week's view was taken at the pier in Castine and shows the State of Maine, the ship used by the Maine Maritime Academy as a training vessel. It is more than impressive in person. (Photo by Katy England).

ORONO This is the time of year when kids begin to believe in the magic of the holidays, and the timeless tradition of 'Nutcracker' helps.

The story is steeped in magic, with Godfather Drosselmeyer (Keith Robinson), creating life-sized toys to perform at his family's Christmas fete. Everyone gets special gifts, but Clara (Haley Williams) gets a special present, much to the ire of her brother Fritz (Nathan Williams). After a tussle, the new present is broken, much to Clara's dismay but he is soon put right by Dosselmeyer. What comes next is a mixture of holiday anticipation and sugar-induced dream wonderland.

Time Waster - Icy Gifts 2'

This is a charming physics puzzle game where you have to repeatedly help Santa out of a tough spot and save as many presents as you can, as well as the big man himself.

Somehow, Santa Claus and all of his presents have become frozen in ice. You have the power to start chain reactions to free the presents and, hopefully, Santa as well in 45 different puzzles. I know, you'd think that Santa would learn not to take a polar plunge after maybe the first 10 or so, but then there would be no game and no wasted time. So, moving on.

Ramsay's Custom Guitars

BANGOR You would be forgiven for not knowing that Kirk Ramsay spends his spare time crafting custom-made guitars in the basement of Bangor Window Shade and Drapery. He's the kind of guy who enjoys making them, but isn't one to brag. You'd notice a certain stylistic theme when you walked into his office the one with about a dozen different guitars hanging from the wall all his work, all different, all awesome.

Time Waster - Rocket Santa'

'Rocket Santa' is a launch game in which Santa is trying to get gifts to men stationed on the moon. (You realize that you don't need a ton of plot for some of these games.)

Bereft of Reindeer, Santa propels himself with increasingly more powerful rockets and collects 'space cash' on his way up (remember what I said about plot?). It's a simple game, and as you get higher you get more cash to purchase more upgrades and eventually break free of the atmosphere and shoot the moon.

A lot like Christmas

Each year Christmas gets exponentially better. The first couple were a blur of the kids not really understanding what was going on or caring about anything beyond the wrapping paper and the boxes that some of their presents came in.

Last year, there was some excitement and some fun to be had during the buildup towards and celebration of Christmas. But this year is different. This year they know. This year it matters.
