Extend your options

Ladies, I have the solution to all your problems well, hair problems, anyway.

Are you constantly complaining about your hair because it is too thin, the wrong color, fine, fragile, too short, boring, suffer from alopecia, hair growing back after chemo or growing out all or part of your hair? Have you thought about hair extensions? This is a growing trend in our area, which I believe is due to more stylists getting the training needed to be able to offer this to our clients.

A bit too summer?'

Fall is here and winter is on its way. Is your hair feeling and looking a bit too "summer?" Those highlights we all had to have in May combined with lots of sun exposure through the summer have left you with a whole head of dry blonde hair and now some pretty dark roots. What do you do now?

Head lice 101

It is a topic none of us really ever want to talk about, but if you have children you really must become aware of the very common and persistent problem that is head lice. Recently, I have been made aware of many reported cases of lice in the Bangor and Ellsworth area. I do find it necessary to get the word out and inform you all in the hopes you will pass the information on to your friends, daycare providers and teachers. Head lice is out there, and if taken care of promptly and properly will go away as fast as it came.

Getting married? Be prepared

Wedding season is in full swing - my most favorite time of year as a hair stylist. Having been a part of many weddings, I have learned a few things that I can share with all of you brides-to-be in hopes I can help you avoid a few of the common mistakes I see.

If you have not hired a wedding planner yet, do it! I wish I had known this for my own wedding. There is absolutely NO comparison between a wedding that has a planner and one that doesn't. As the bride, you should be soaking up every little moment and spending time with loved ones instead of running around like a crazy lady all stressed out on your wedding day. You may think that hiring a planner is too expensive, but a planner can help you get organized, recommend vendors, plan the entire event or be hired to work the day of the wedding setting up and organizing the day. I just can't stress to you how invaluable a wedding planner is to you and your wedding. Leave this stuff to the professionals.

Go natural

This is the time of the year when almost every one of my clients wants a change to her look and hairstyle. It is a very fun and exciting time to be a hair stylist. I got caught in the rut of being boring, and asked a client this week 'So, are we going to just trim your hair?' She looked at me and said, 'No, we are going to cut ita LOT.' We both laughed, and I was very excited to give her a brand new haircut. Seeing the transformation in my clients is so rewarding.

Everyone always wants to know what the newest trend is, and the truth is trends just go round and round in a circle with a little twist on the way they were done before. For spring/summer 2012 it is natural highlights. If you want to be trendy, then do away with the ultra balayage hair color and/or chunky highlights and embrace fine, thin natural foils.

Bangs and face shape

Often clients want to change up their look, but they really don't want to cut any length or add more layers. That is always a real challenge for a hair stylist and leaves us with very few options. What I always tell them is to add bangs and/or face framing layers. Luckily they are the biggest trend that I see right now in all shapes, sizes and styles that you can imagine. If you want to change up your look, easily go for bangs.

The next question to ask is what style of bangs is going to work for you. I would ask you to consider your hair texture, type and most importantly your face shape. Here are the four face shapes and the bangs that go with them:

Spring is in the hair

The gorgeous weather we have been having early this spring definitely has me thinking about summer. A change of seasons is always a good time for a new start, whether that means new clothes, new decor in the house, diet, exercise or anything else.

So how about a new hairstyle? I mean a brand new style - maybe something you have never done before. Why not? What are you waiting for - or better yet, what are you hanging on to? I cannot count the times that I give someone a brand new hairstyle and they look and feel 10 years younger.

I am not just telling you to do this without having experienced it for myself. I cut my hair off recently after five years of having long hair and swearing I would never cut it. I can honestly say I am really happy I did. It looks so much healthier and because it is, I can do so much more with it. Maybe you have been working hard to 'clean up' your life - don't forget about your hair!

Female hair loss

Female hair loss is a very sensitive subject, but one that needs to be addressed. If you are experiencing it yourself, know that you are not alone: I suffer from it, my mother suffers from it, and so do roughly 75 percent of my female clients. No matter how you look at it, it is real and it is there. It is better to be informed and battle it early than to ignore it and hope that your hair is going to grow back. Fortunately, there are many options to consider if you are suffering from hair loss or thinning hair. I know that I won't cover them all, but I will attempt to leave you better equipped after reading this article.

First of all, genetics plays the biggest role in your fate when it comes to hair loss or thinning hair. Start looking at your genetic line on your mother's side, specifically your mother's father. If your maternal grandfather was bald, chances are you are going to have an issue. Sadly, if you notice thinning hair on yourself already, you really are up against a wall. The good news is that there are products available to help you keep what you have got, but you have to start now.
