The 19th annual “Fright at the Fort” features many of King’s most loved stories, taking shape in the massive granite stronghold of Fort Knox.

Calling all zombies

PROSPECT The Friends of Fort Knox are beginning to ramp up for their annual Halloween event, Fright at the Fort, and are seeking additional volunteers.

Volunteers are being sought to shuffle through the dark passageways of the fort as terrifying zombies during one of Maine's largest Halloween events. Volunteers unable to muster the appropriate ghoulish spirit may help out by serving as group tour guides, makeup artists or security helpers.

Pirates Run Amok' at Fort Knox

PROSPECT - The Friends of Fort Knox are sponsoring their annual Pirate Day at the Fort Knox State Historic Site, Prospect, Saturday, July 21, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. In addition, the professional pirates of the Dark Rose and their vaunted ship, the Must Roos, will be plying the waters of the Penobscot River, letting loose cannon fire at the pirate cannon battery at the Fort.

This is the ideal event for all those who have harbored a secret desire to be a pirate. Those wishing to participate in this event are asked to don their best pirate costume and practice pirate speech and accent. The pirates will engage in a cannon firing demonstrations, sword fighting, gunplay and creating general mayhem.

Two music shows coming to Fort Knox

Elton John tribute at Fort Knox

PROSPECT People have the choice of listening to vintage Elton John songs or the lyrical tunes coming from massed bagpipe bands in the coming next two weekends at the Fort Knox State historic site. The two events, which are part of the Friends of Fort Knox's annual special event schedule, take place on Saturday evening, July 7 and 14.

The first music show will feature the Elton John tribute band Yellow Brick Road, Saturday, July 7, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., on the Fort parade grounds. Event organizers say that this band is like listening to the real renowned performer (listen on the Friends' website,, under event section). Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. Bring your lawn chairs, blankets and a picnic. Dancing is allowed and encouraged. Costuming is optional. Tickets may be purchased at the Fort Visitor Center gift shop the day of event or in advance (469-6553).
