Kibbles and Picks 2018 - Week 17

I almost didn’t bother writing this.

With a 10-game deficit and two weeks left, I had to gamble with my picks last week. It did not go well. I went 9-7 for the week, which isn’t terrible. However, Stella went a remarkable 13-3 to add another four games to her lead.

And so, sitting an insurmountable 14 games behind, I almost didn’t bother. But instead, I thought I’d just muster up my picks and finish strong. I’m not worrying about her picks – I’m simply making mine. And yet, even with all that, we still differed on five games. It isn’t much; my best-case scenario is that I get all five and manage to claw my way back within single digits.

Kibbles and Picks 2018 - Week 16

So I bounced back somewhat this week. Thanks to a 10-6 record for me and an uncharacteristic 8-8 out of Stella – her second in as many weeks – I gained two games. Of course, that basically just makes up for the two that I lost last week, but regardless – I’m 10 behind with two weeks to play.

Time for my Hail Mary.

This week, Stella and I differ on fully half the slate. Eight games. If I can pull off a big (and I mean BIG) run, I can erase a significant portion of Stella’s lead. However, all Stella has to do is keep it close and she more or less assures herself of a victory. Seriously – I have to go at least six-for-eight to have any shot. So here’s hoping.

Stella is unconcerned.

Kibbles and Picks 2018 - Week 15

That was not good. Not good at all.

It’s safe to say that this was one of the worst weeks Stella and I have had in the entire history of this feature. Stella went just 8-8, leaving me with an opportunity to make a move. And move I did – backwards. I put up a real stinker – 6-10. And so her lead is back up to 12 games, with just three weeks left to go.

We’re at odds on just six games this week, so basically, I need to absolutely crush to have any sort of hope of taking her down this season. If I can’t run the table or at least come close, Stella is simply going to stroll to an easy win.

Kibbles and Picks 2018 - Week 14

I’m running out of time.

After a spectacular performance in Week 12, I put up another solid number for Week 13, going 10-6. Unfortunately for my chances, so did Stella. This means that with just four weeks to go, her lead remains at 10.

And so … time to go big.

Stella and I are at odds on fully half the Week 14 slate. Eight games. It’s room enough for one of us to make a big move. Granted, I took some risks here – I had to if I was going to have any shot at catching up (or, perhaps more achievably, at least keep it close).

Kibbles and Picks 2018 - Week 13

I don’t want to alarm anyone, but this week, I … won?

I WON.

Granted, it was only by two games. And yes, I had to go 12-3 to do it – Stella put up a rock-solid 10-5 herself. But still – I WON. For the first time in weeks, Stella’s lead actually went down. There’s still plenty of ground to make up - her lead right now is still 10 games – but I’m actually trending upward. Hooray!

But my job is far from over. I took some risks last week to start swinging the momentum. For me to keep it up, I had to take a few more. All the teams have had their byes, so we’re back to a 16-game weekly slate. Of those 16, Stella and I differ on six. Let’s see if I can’t slice a couple off that big lead.

Kibbles and Picks 2018 - Week 12

Yeah … I’m definitely in trouble.

See, while Stella didn’t have a spectacular week, going 8-5, I managed to fail spectacularly to the tune of 4-9. That’s four more games added to Stella’s lead, putting it up into double-digit territory – 12, to be exact.

What this means is that I am going to need some miraculous moves to get back into this thing. Granted, there are six weeks left counting this one; if I can pick up two games each time, I’ll finish in a tie. Of course, we all know how unlikely that is – I think I’ve pulled that feat off exactly once all season so far – but hey, at least there’s a chance.

We’re at odds in six of the 15 games on the Week 12 slate. It’s not an ideal situation, but I’ve made a couple of dice rolls and Stella has made some unorthodox picks, so who knows how it will play out?

Kibbles and Picks 2018 - Week 11

Another week, another tie.

Stella and I both handled our business to the tune of 9-5 – a good record, to be sure, but let’s be clear: 9-5 isn’t going to cut it. Not when I’m eight games back. I need to start making real gains soon if I’m going to have any chance of keeping this a contest.

I’ve got a shot to make up some ground this week – even with six teams on bye and just 13 games on the schedule, we’re at odds in just shy of half of them. A big week out of me could close the gap considerably.

Kibbles and Picks 2018 - Week 10

Holy crap.

So Stella lit me up again in Week 9 – she put up a shocking line of 10-3 against my mere 7-6. That’s another three games tacked onto her lead, putting it up to eight games. Let’s bear in mind that we’ve passed the halfway point of the season – I’ve got a real uphill climb if I’m going to figure out how to make this competitive.

I’m not going to make up much ground this week, regardless of what happens. Stella and I differ on just five of the week’s 14 games; even if I run the table, she’s going to be comfortably ahead. And let’s be real – I’m not going to run the table.

Kibbles and Picks 2018 - Week 9

At least I didn’t LOSE any ground this week.

Under most circumstances, a 10-4 week could be considered quite good. It was a solid performance for me. Unfortunately, Stella put up an identically solid 10-4 of her own, meaning that Week 8 is a push and Stella maintains her five-game lead.

Now that we’re entering the bye-heavy weeks of the schedule, there are fewer opportunities available for me to make my move. However, I’m making the most of what I’ve got in Week 9; I’ve disagreed with Stella’s take on seven games – more than half the slate.

It looks to be a chaotic weekend, even less predictable than usual. And we’ve both made some questionable calls. Here’s hoping the ball bounces my way.

Kibbles and Picks 2018 - Week 8

I suppose I should be grateful. After the drubbing I took in Week 6, getting beaten by just one game last week doesn’t seem so bad.

Of course, it means that Stella’s lead is now five games. It’s typical really – she lets be hang around for the first few weeks, then drops a monster week on me to establish a solid lead. From there, she just slowly (and adorably) grinds me into the dirt.

But hey – I’ve got a shot to get some back this week. We’re at odds on over half the slate; eight of the 14 games are in dispute. There’s potential for me to make a big move. There’s also potential for the hole I’m in to get MUCH bigger. We’ll have to see how it goes.
