A star is born?

Raising money with a rumba

I have never been one to fear making a fool of myself in front of others. I have been on plenty of stages in my time - I've performed with local companies such as Penobscot Theatre and Ten Bucks Theatre and many others, not to mention my time with The Focus Group so I've already said and done all kinds of things to embarrass myself and my family.

Now, however, I have the opportunity to embarrass myself in a whole new way and for a great cause.

A happening Half Acre

New nightspot opens on Harlow Street

BANGOR There's a new club in town.

The latest addition to the ever-expanding Bangor nightlife scene arrives on August 24. The Half Acre is a new nightclub located at 190 Harlow St.

Matt Brann and Mike Bjork are at the helm of this exciting new business. Brann is the former owner/proprietor of Club Gemini, a nightspot that occupied the same space a few years ago.

'We hadn't had any tenants for a while, so we wanted to renovate the space as a turnkey business,' said Brann. 'But when Mike and I got to working together, we eventually decided to dig up some resources and open the place up ourselves.'

Step Up Revolution' stumbles

Film offers elaborate dance numbers and not much else

As a film critic, I have the opportunity to see a lot of films that I wouldn't necessarily choose to see. I'm a pretty easy audience I have a fairly wide range of interest but even then, I occasionally wind up seeing a film that is completely outside of my typical area of enjoyment.

Which brings us to 'Step Up Revolution.'

BANGOR - The new season of 'Dancing With the Stars' starts Monday, March 19, on ABC, but the new cast has nothing on Maine's own Dancing For the Stars competitors, who are slated to perform at the Bangor Civic Center on March 17. The fundraiser, which benefits the Phillips Strickland House, a non-profit retirement home, teams up well-known locals with trained dancers from the Robinson Ballet.

"We have such a great mix of professionals and stars from the community that the enthusiasm from this group is just infectious. They're just gung-ho," said Karen Higgins of Phillips Strickland House.

Maria Baeza, an American Folk Festival board member, is one of the local stars that will be performing at the event. She and her dance partner, David Lamon of Ellsworth, will be doing a tango routine.
