ORONO - This week, I got the chance to sit down with Jeremy Swayman, a freshman goalie for the University of Maine Black Bears hockey team.

In addition, the 18-year-old Alaskan was taken in the fourth round of the 2017 NHL Draft with the 111th pick by the Boston Bruins.

Swayman played the 2016-17 hockey season for the Sioux Falls Stampede of the USHL, posting a .914 save percentage and a 2.90 goals against average. He attended Bruins development camp earlier this summer; fellow Black Bear goalie Rob McGovern was there as well.

Fair weather complainers

First, congratulations to the University of Maine men's hockey team for battling to the Hockey East Championship game and earning a berth at the NCAA tournament. Twenty-three wins and counting...

Second, congrats to the UMaine hockey fans (well, most of them) for actually acknowledging that the Bears are still playing into late March.

To some of you I just can't take it anymore. You've finally pushed me too far! By "you," I mean the UMaine hockey "fans" who want to see nothing more than Tim Whitehead fail and be fired, as though the program would be better off if that happened.

It's off to the quarterfinals

UMaine secures home-ice advantage in win over UNH

ORONO It wasn't a high-powered offensive game by any means, but the University of Maine Black Bears hung on to an early 1-0 lead against the University of New Hampshire Wildcats on Saturday to win both the game and home-ice advantage for the first round of Hockey East quarterfinals.

While dubbed Senior Night, the game was all sophomores with goalie Dan Sullivan and defenseman Brice O'Connor leading the Black Bears to victory after O'Connor scored the only goal of the game and Sullivan ended the night with his second shutout of the year.

The win was the 20th of the season for the Black Bears, who improve to 20-11-3 on the season and 15-10-2 in Hockey East play. New Hampshire fell to 14-17-3 overall and 11-14-2 in conference play.
