Scary Christmas Krampus'

Horror-comedy takes new look at old legend

My love of Christmas movies is well-documented at this point. Good ones, bad ones, funny ones, sad ones it makes little difference to me. Obviously, I have my favorites we all do but for the most part, I can find something to love in all of them, regardless of how familiar the story and the characters might be.

Patriots Progress Report 2015 Third Quarter

What a difference two weeks can make.

Just a fortnight ago, the New England Patriots were riding high, sporting a shiny 10-0 record and prompting talk from fans about a possible undefeated season. After a pair of defeats one not that surprising (the Broncos in Denver) and one very much so (the Eagles at home), the Patriots now sit at 10-2. They're still sitting atop the AFC East, but the road to a top seed and a first-round bye is looking a whole lot rougher.

A banner year for books 15 of 2015's best

This year has been a phenomenal year for the written word. So many brilliant works of fiction and nonfiction alike have made the scene in 2015.

Reviewing books is one of the most enjoyable parts of my work at The Maine Edge; I've had the opportunity to read dozens of different works over the course of the year. And while most of them had something significant to offer, there are some that stand apart from the rest.

Celebrity Slam - (12/02/15)

The total package

One of the easiest ways for celebrities to make waves is to send risqu pictures of themselves out into the internet ether. What better way to combine a desperate need for attention and a complete and utter shamelessness than to flash a little skin?

Conspiracy-minded psychology

Suspicious Minds: Why We Believe Conspiracy Theories'

Conspiracy theories have been a source of fascination for centuries. Whenever anything big or even not-so-big happens, there are people who seek alternative explanations. These are the people who refuse to accept conventional wisdom, the people who believe that there is always more to the story than what we are told.

The Good Dinosaur' is pretty great

Latest Pixar offering is sweet, visually stunning

When it comes to animated films, the gold standard has been set by the folks at Pixar over the past couple of decades. Their combination of brilliant storytelling and beautiful aesthetic has resulted in a body of work that is consistently excellent, with only the occasional hiccup here and there.

Creed' goes the distance

Film reinvigorates beloved Rocky' franchise

It's no secret that Hollywood has developed a tendency to look back in order to move forward. The nostalgia-powered trend in cinema is to revisit old ideas rather than spend the time to develop new ones. Too often, that trend results in warmed-over fare that is passable at best and lacking any real creative spark.

Kibbles and Picks 2015 Week 13

So things went a little bit better last week, with Stella and I both putting up identical 9-7 records that were perfectly respectable (albeit unspectacular). Considering how the last few weeks have gone, anything that's not sub-.500 is a win.

It does mean that I failed to make up any ground on Stella; she remains in the lead by three games. However, we do differ on seven match-ups here in Week 13. There's a real opportunity for me to make a move here and frankly, if I'm going to make a move, it needs to happen soon.

Kibbles and Picks 2015 Week 12

Another week of mediocrity from both of us I managed to hit .500 for the first time in what seems like forever, though just barely. 7-7 is less than spectacular. Stella's struggles also continued, however, to the tune of 6-8.

That's one more game Stella's lead has dwindled to just three games. Now that the bye weeks are over, there are even more games on the docket, giving me that many more opportunities to catch up. Still, the season's end is definitely approaching if I'm going to make a movie, it needs to happen soon.
