A year of poor prognostication

The Edge's own Yestradamus reviews 2012's sporting picks

Those who read the Maine Edge with regularity know two things when it comes to my relationship to sports I love them and I'm really terrible at predicting what's going to happen. I truly am a sporting Yestradamus. As in the opposite of Nostradamus.

For our Year in Review, I thought it might be fun to take a look back and own up to a year's worth of unfortunate predictions. While there are plenty of pundits out there who will toss out predictions willy-nilly, not all of them will take ownership of those picks when they turn out to be wrong. I am ready for the reckoning.

2012 Year in Review

Allen's Picks

Dana White

Not only was this my favorite interview of 2012, it was one of the biggest I've ever gotten. Dana White is the head honcho of UFC, the world's preeminent mixed martial arts organization. He's a passionate proponent for his sport and a shrewd businessman not to mention a really nice guy.

Mr. White also has a Maine connection, so when the opportunity to sit down with him came along, I jumped on it. In a small-town diner/convenience store, I was privileged to listen to the face of UFC talk about all aspects of his exponentially-growing sport. We talked about recent events, about the business side of the operations, about fighter health I even got his to discuss his all-time favorite fighters and fights.

Fusion Awards Extravaganza

BANGOR Fusion Bangor has revived its annual awards event and will take to the Bangor Waterfront on Nov. 15 in what organizers are calling the Fusion Awards Extravaganza.

The day of the event will see a temporary addition to the waterfront: a large tent, popping with different colors and bursting with music from the 1980s. This will be an awards ceremony and social event like no other in the Bangor Region.

Red Sox Report Card May

There's no disputing that the 2012 Red Sox season has been a bit of a disappointment thus far. Sure, there have been extenuating circumstances the number of injuries has bordered on astounding but those problems are no different than those shared by half the teams in the league.

After a less-than-ideal start, the Sox spent the month of May slowly digging themselves out of the hole April put them in. In fits and starts, the team managed to drag itself above the .500 mark and enter June with a winning record.

Sure, they're still planted at the bottom of the division, but the American League East is going to be won by a war of attrition there are only a couple of games currently separating first from last. But if the Red Sox want to be a serious contender, they need to build on what successes they've had this month and find a way to make some significant upgrades.
