Turns out, there’s a fair amount of local beer-related news happening right now! Time for another installment of the semi-regular Three Pint Stance feature – Quick Sips!

Maine Beer ‘Leeds’ The Way!

Last week, the Maine Brewers Guild announced the next destination for the Maine Beer Box, a shipping container that has been transformed to a mobile beer dispensing unit with 78 draft lines that was created in partnership with Icelandic shipping company Eimskip. After last year’s successful maiden voyage to Iceland, the Beer Box is headed to the Leeds International Beer Festival in Leeds, England from September 8-11.

A final list of participating Maine Breweries has yet to be released, but the Guild is hoping to send beer and representatives from 78 Maine breweries over to Leeds to showcase at the four-day beer festival.

Bye Bye Bear Brew - Hello Common Loon!

While details are still slim, according to a Facebook posting from the Bear Brew Pub, the historic Orono pub has been sold and will be changing its name. The Bear Brew Pub’s last weekend of operation will be Memorial Day weekend, and after that the new owners (good local folks, I promise!) will reopen under a new name, The Common Loon Public House. More information on this story as it develops.

A True ‘Taste of the County’

Blank Canvas Brewing has released a very interesting brew called “A Taste of the County.” This beer, made in collaboration with Maine Malt House, Blue Ox Malthouse, Mainiacal Yeast Lab, Aurora Mills and Farm, Aroostook Hops, Nature’s Circle Farm and John White Jr. of the Blackfly Brew Fest.

The beer is a Farmhouse Pale Ale made completely with ingredients, from the water to the malts, hops and even yeast sourced from Aroostook County. This is a really great idea, and I am super pleased to see it go from concept to glass. To try it for yourself, head up to the Blackfly Brewfest May 19 in Houlton!

Portland gets a ‘Definitive’ brewery

The newest brewery to Maine’s every growing list of sweet-wort producers is set to open at the fabled Industrial Way in Portland, directly across from legendary Maine brewery Allagash Brewing Company. The Grand Opening is set for May 19, and is slated to feature four beers on tap, but information about the beers had yet to be released as of press time.

And that’s your Quick Sips! Spring has sprung and the beer scene is buzzing. Prost!
