The success of the theatre, which has hosted musicals, plays and drama camps for kids for years, is based on the support of the community. Ticket sales only cover half of the facility's operating costs, so a lot of the remaining costs are covered by generous donors or through fundraisers.
"The race will follow a tremendously successful season, throughout which our audience grew in size and loyalty. So we're celebrating that and hoping to draw more people into the fold," said Budd. "We'd love to raise a few thousand dollars, but friend-raising is an important goal as well."
Registration for the June 15 Race to the Stage is $17 for adults 18 and older and $12 for youth. Same-day registration will also be available for an additional $3. Budd said prizes will be awarded for best race time and best costume.
"Anything goes, and the more creative the better. Remnants from Halloween's past, old bridesmaid dresses, group themes - bring it on," said Budd. "In April, I participated in a 5K in downtown Bangor that coincided with the circus, and as I was running by the auditorium I passed a clown in full regalia. That guy would fit right in at the Race to the Stage."
