Olive oil your secret ingredient

Here I sit on a chilly winter morning looking out the window at snow and blowing trees when all I want is warm sun, blue skies and some moisture in the air. Hot and humid days are on the horizon. We made it through January, the days are getting longer and soon enough it will be spring.

Winter and the dry air that comes along with it does a real number on our skin and hair. A great solution to revive and re-moisturize your dry hair and scalp is olive oil. I am willing to bet that you have some, so go check the pantry.

Olive oil is rich in vitamin E and antioxidants. This is a perfect home remedy for your dry hair and scalp. I recommend doing this once a week or as needed. It is so simple and easy to do. You will need at least 1/4 cup of oil for short to medium hair and around 1/2 cup for longer hair. Warm the olive oil in the microwave before applying it to your hair roots to ends. Grab a shower cap or plastic wrap after you have saturated your hair and scalp and leave it to work its magic for at least 30 minutes. I even suggest sleeping with it in your hair overnight and rinsing and shampooing it out in the morning.  You can't over use it by leaving it in too long. However, you need to allow it the 30 minutes in order to be effective.

Another wonderful thing about olive oil is that it is shown to help with the all-too-common problem of hair loss. Because olive oil is rich in antioxidants and acts as an astringent is known to remove impurities including DHT (a hormone, found on the scalp, known to cause hair loss), using olive oil for regrowth of hair is suggested for everyday use. Put a small amount in a dish (preferably warm) and use your fingertips to massage the oil into your scalp. I would suggest doing this at night before bed and shampooing in your morning shower.

I would suggest first trying this over the weekend or a night when you have the day off following your treatment. While this treatment is wonderful and will really help, it can leave the hair a bit heavy the next day. Whenever you try it for the first time, plan for a pony tail kind of day following. Don't let this deter you from trying it - your hair and scalp are screaming at you to do it right now!

Olive oil is known to cure many scalp issues, so why not give it a try? You definitely have nothing to lose and potentially a whole new head of shiny, healthy, thick, long hair to gain.
