We know Cedric the Entertainer from his current CBS sitcom “The Neighborhood” and from movies like “Barbershop,” “Johnson Family Vacation” and “The Original Kings of Comedy” but until now, most of us didn’t know he could really sing.

Cedric makes his singing debut in a duet with British singing sensation Sonna on “Walking in a Winter Wonderland,” the lead track from his new album “Cedric the Entertainer & Silas White Present a Powerhouse Christmas.”

The album features a number of special guests, including Grammy-nominated MAJOR., jazz’s Dave Koz, country trio Auburn Road and Rascal Flatts lead singer Gary LeVox. It’s available now in music stores and all digital platforms.

Sonna’s 2015 hit “Strong” from the soundtrack to Disney’s “Cinderella” sold in the millions, and she is readying her next release, due on Valentine’s Day 2020.

Cedric and Sonna checked in with The Maine Edge for a dual interview about their careers and their Christmas collaboration.

The Maine Edge: You have a nice variety of Christmas music on this album. Cedric, we know you from your comedy, but I didn’t know you could sing. How did this record come to be?

Cedric the Entertainer: Silas White is a big music producer (Justin Timberlake, Sonna), and he heard this thing in my voice – this kind of older, smoother, almost Buble-esque kind of style, and thought the combination of my voice with Sonna’s voice would make for a great song. Sonna is such an amazingly talented singer, she made it easy for me. I’m the straight man in this duo (laughs).

Sonna: Oh my God, it was so much fun to work with Cedric in the studio. When I heard him sing for the first time, I was like ‘Do you know how deep your voice is?’ He said (she lowers her voice for effect) ‘Well, I’m just doing my thing, you know?’ (laughs). He doesn’t give himself enough credit because he really can sing. We sang live together, and it was a beautiful surprise to hear his voice blend with mine.

The Maine Edge: Sonna, you also sing the George Michael composition “Last Christmas” on this album. Is that song important to you?

Sonna: I can relate to that song 100%. For me, it’s a true story, and I was just about welling up with tears as I sang it and reminisced about a situation I had gone through. “Last Christmas” is very close to my heart, and it’s also my dad’s favorite Christmas song. He’s extremely excited that I’m singing it on this record.

The Maine Edge: Where will you each be on Christmas day? What are your plans?

Cedric the Entertainer: I’m usually at home with my kids, even though they’re not little anymore. My youngest is 16 and my son is home from college. We’ll get up and have a big breakfast, have fun at the house, then we’ll visit family around Los Angeles. And then I’m going on tour right after Christmas.

Sonna: This will actually be my first Christmas in Los Angeles. I’m really looking forward to it but I’m not sure what to expect. I’m sure my manager will have me work through the Christmas season because we’re both workaholics. We’re gearing up for the release of my album on February 14, so I’ll be back and forth between America and London. It’s going to be an exciting year.

The Maine Edge: Cedric, your CBS show “The Neighborhood” is doing really well. Are you having as much fun as it appears?

Cedric the Entertainer: Indeed, man. This show has been one of the greatest experiences of my career. I’ve done many sitcoms and movies, but to be doing this show on CBS right now with this cast (including Max Greenfield, Sheaun McKinney, Marcel Spears, Hank Greenspan, Tichina Arnold and Beth Behrs) and all of our writers and directors – we’re just having a blast. Everybody should tune in Monday nights at 8:00 for some real laughs.
