BANGOR The racing season in New England may be weeks away, but fans are already getting up close and personal with the cars and the drivers. Speedway 95 held its annual spring pre-season car show at the Bangor Mall this weekend. Cars from a number of divisions were parked throughout the mall, including Street, Sportsman, Stars of Tomorrow and many other divisions that race at Speedway 95. Drivers and their crews handed out pictures of the cars to fans, let them pose for photos with the car and displayed their trophies.

One of the divisions represented was NELCAR, or New England Legend Cars. According to uslegendcars.com, Legend cars are '5/8-scale fiberglass full-fendered versions of the famed NASCAR modifieds driven by legendary drivers such as Fireball Roberts, Buck Baker, Curtis Turner, Speedy Thompson and Banjo Matthews.'

Wyatt Alexander is a driver for NELCAR. Alexander says that his favorite part about participating in the car show is the people.

'I like meeting all kinds of new people who may not be familiar in racing, and introducing them to it,' Alexander said. This will be his third year racing the legend cars and his 11th year racing in general. Alexander believes that his drive to race come from his family tree.

'My grandfather and my father are both huge inspirations for me,' he said. 'My grandfather raced in the '70s and '80s and is being inducted into the Maine Motorsports Hall of Fame this year.'

Alexander says that he is prepared to enter the 2014 season with a brand new Legend car. In addition to this, Alexander says that he will also be racing a late model off and on throughout the season.

Those who stopped by the Speedway 95 table at the Bangor Mall could vote for the People's Choice Award. The competition divided the cars by model. Wyatt Alexander won the People's Choice Award for the NELCAR Legends.

One eye-catching car that walked away with a trophy for that competition was Lexi Roach's bright yellow 'bug.' The car's paint job included purple shooting stars and a decal for the campaign Stop the Texts, Stop the Wrecks. Another notable feature to Roach's car was the eyelashes on the headlight stickers. Roach's crew was also recognized with a third place trophy for the best-dressed crew. Roach races for the Stars of Tomorrow division.

Opening Day for Speedway 95 is Saturday, May 3. Speedway 95 is located in Hermon. For more information about their racing schedule or the divisions that they feature, you can visit speedway95racing.com.
