Second place finish earns Community Care much needed funds

BANGOR - Two weeks ago we told you about Community Care in Bangor competing in Toyota's 100 Cars for Good campaign. For one day only, the local nonprofit was vying against five other out-of-state nonprofits for a free set of wheels from the car dealer. Although Community Care didn't win the contest, it did place a respectable second.

"I'm surprised at how close it was," said Kate Davis, executive director of Community Care. "There was a 3 percent difference between first and second place. We don't know what that means in terms of votes, but when we found the winning agency was just outside of Orlando, I was really pleased with the Bangor market. I think it went well for us."

As the runner up, Community Care did receive a $1,000 cash grant - a prize that will certainly help this organization which offers treatment foster care, case management and in-home clinical treatments for families living in Piscataquis, Penobscot and Aroostook counties.

"We have this fund called the Care Fund, and what we use that money for is unmet client needs. Most of it is funded through our employees, which I think is pretty unique. So the money [or winnings] will go there," said Davis.

This was the first time Community Care has ever competed in such a contest. It turned out not only to be a profitable endeavor but a great learning experience too.

"This was our first major effort like this, so there was a lot of excitement in the agency," explained Davis. "I think we have a good base and foundation now for future fundraising and contest efforts that we can be a part of."
