The Sports Edge - My sports bucket list

It seems ever since "The Bucket List," starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman, came out a couple of years ago, everyone has been working on their own bucket list. For the record, a bucket list is a list of things you hope to accomplish before you kick the bucket.

I recently reconnected with an old (she will not appreciate that word) high school friend through the wondrous technology that is Facebook. She told me she had put together a bucket list. It contained very reasonable items such as visit Niagara Falls and vacation in Hawaii. Her list got me thinking; maybe I should assemble a sports bucket list. As the song says, "The lines on my face are getting clearer."

Here's what I have come up with in no particular order:

Hit a hole in one: If I play golf long enough, it should happen. Former UMaine women's basketball coach Peter Gavett has hit two this year alone. A couple of weeks ago some 6-year-old girl in Illinois sank one. It seems like I'm entitled to at least one.

Visit the new Yankee Stadium and Wrigley Field: Shame on me for not getting to the old Yankee Stadium before they leveled it. I'm pretty sure I can get to the new on sometime in the next couple of years. Wrigley might be a little more difficult, but I do have a scheme. My wife went to college at Northwestern in Chicago. Maybe I can convince her we'll be taking a kind of family vacation.

Walk on the grass at Fenway Park, and go tap on the door leading into the Green Monster: Now that Manny is gone I'm not sure who will answer it, but it would be fun to find out.

Drive a harness racing horse: I've enjoyed harness racing since I was a kid. My dad would make the trips a few times a summer from MDI to Bass Park to watch the races and place a few bets. It occurred to me a couple of years ago that I would really love to drive one of those horses around the track a couple of times. Not in a race, just for fun. Giddyup!

See the Bruins win the Stanley Cup: Wait, what? That already happened? Sweet! I was afraid that was all a dream. OK, check that one off.

Learn to ice skate: I usually try to hibernate in the winter, but I think it would be fun to take my twin girls to a local ice arena skating. However, it will be wicked embarrassing if I land on my butt after just five seconds. So I'm going to have to get a little rink time in soon.

Announce a basketball game on the radio in the new auditorium: Since 1988 I've called more than a hundred tournament games in the old Mecca. No question, lots of great memories. But I am hopeful to be part of the christening of a new building in a few years. And I'm going to work into my call a catch phrase: "Arena Yes!"

See the Patriots play the Cowboys in the Super bowl: I have no control over this, but it's my dream to see the Patriots play Dallas in a super bowl and blowout the boys by about 50 points.

Fix my golf swing so I don't slice: Actually, forget this one. It'll take a couple of lifetimes to accomplish that feat.

That's my list. If you have additions or thoughts, feel free to drop me an e mail.
