Red Sox Report Card 2014 Postmortem

Written by Allen Adams

As we head into October, Major League Baseball is preparing to enter its postseason. As of this writing, 10 teams are still standing. They all still have hopes that 2014 will end with a World Series victory (though two of those teams will have already made their respective exits by Wednesday's end).

You're likely well aware that the Boston Red Sox will not be one of those teams.

Red Sox Report Card (09/03/14)

Written by Allen Adams

For anyone still paying attention, the 2014 season has turned into a real slog for the Boston Red Sox. This team the defending World Series champion is nestled firmly in last place in the American League East, 20 games out of first place. Heck, they're six games out of fourth. Suffice it to say, there's no miracle finish that could possibly pull Boston out of the morass. They'd have to get red hot just to have a shot at finishing at .500.

Obviously, that's not going to happen. Instead, the time has come to start searching for the positive. We look at the trades that were made at the deadline and tell ourselves that this team has set itself up for success in 2015. Of course, we have no idea how successful (or unsuccessful) they'll be next year. But they'll be different. Maybe they'll be younger. Maybe the kids will step up and the new guys will play big and the old guard can pull out one more vintage season. It's a lot of maybes, but that's where we're at with the Sox. It's the nature of the game. So it goes.

Red Sox Report Card May 2014

Written by Allen Adams

The month of May has been an up and down experience for the Boston Red Sox. While the team closed out the month strong they won their last six games that streak came on the heels of a much less impressive 10-game losing streak. When you compound that with a mediocre May start 6-5 in their first 11 games the best thing that you can say about the month of May is that it's over.

Fortunately for the Sox, the once-dominant American League East has thus far proven to be anything but. They may be languishing in fourth place currently, but other than Toronto a team that is due to come back down to earth sooner rather than later no squad is performing at a particularly high level. There's plenty of time to come back.

Red Sox Report Card April 2014

Written by Allen Adams

Ah yes back in the swing of spring. The Boston Red Sox have been on the field for a whole month long enough for us to get a sense of just what kind of team we've got in 2014.

It's remarkable how quickly the fanbase will turn. Sure, the Sox have gotten off to a slow start this season a slow start that will obviously be reflected in the Report Card but it's amazing how many fans are perfectly willing to write off the entire campaign after 26 games.

Patriots Progress Report Fourth Quarter (2013)

Written by Allen Adams

The months-long grind of the NFL regular season has come to an end. And the New England Patriots have closed it out with yet another strong month. By winning three of their last four, the Patriots once again took the AFC East division title; they also ensured themselves the second seed in the playoffs, guaranteeing at least one home game this postseason.

It wasn't always pretty they led off the season's final quarter with a squeaked-out victory over the relatively hapless Cleveland Brownsa victory in which they benefited greatly from some generosity on the part of the officials. They followed that up with a narrow defeat at the hands of division rival Miami. However, New England was strong down the home stretch, with a blowout win over the Ravens followed by a two-touchdown victory over the Buffalo Bills in the final game of the regular season.

Patriots Progress Report Second Quarter 2013

Written by Allen Adams

The second four games of the NFL season have not been nearly as kind to New England as the first four. That shouldn't be surprising; the Patriots' 4-0 start came together largely through smoke and mirrors not to mention more than a few lucky breaks.

Those breaks started going against New England over the course of these last four games. Still, considering the injury concerns the team has had to deal with losing two of their best defensive players in Vince Wilfork and Jerod Mayo, for instance a 2-2 record is perfectly respectable. Frankly, with those four wins to open the season combined with the relative struggles of the other teams in the AFC East, the Patriots can go .500 for the rest of the year and likely cruise into the playoffs.

Red Sox Report Card August

Written by Allen Adams

The Boston Red Sox roll into September with a fairly small but significant lead in the American League East division. While the season is far from over there's a good month of baseball yet to be played Boston has put itself in prime position to ensure advancement into the postseason.

August wasn't a spectacular month for the Sox, although they did manage to finish a handful of games over the .500 mark. The team did put together a fairly consistent performance, though the offense did generally outperform the defense. While said performance didn't put them at the top of the league in any given category, they were relatively near the top in just about everything very near in some cases.

Red Sox Report Card July

Written by Allen Adams

We're about to enter the dog days of the MLB season. While the Red Sox have sat at the top of the American League East division for much of the season, their performance in July has brought them back to the pack; the Tampa Bay Rays are neck-and-neck with Boston thanks to a scorching-hot month of baseball, while the Baltimore Orioles lurk not far behind. And of course, only a fool counts out the Yankees especially with two months left in the season.

Still, the Red Sox are playing solid baseball. Considering the quality of the division in which they play, they're performing reasonably well a couple of games over .500 for July is nothing to sneeze at. You'd like to see them put some distance between themselves and the rest of the AL East, but that seems unlikely to happen. Expect even more of a battle in the month of August.

Red Sox Report Card April

Written by Allen Adams

We're a month into the 2013 Major League Baseball season and things are looking awfully good so far for the Boston Red Sox. They're sitting at the top of the division and performing well in just about every aspect of the game.

While they've had to deal with some injuries, the general esprit de corps of this team has made them a pleasure to watch a far cry from the frankly unlikeable squads Boston has sported over the past couple of seasons. Regardless, it's nice to have baseball back.

Patriots Progress Report Fourth Quarter

Written by Allen Adams

After 17 weeks, the 2012 NFL regular season has finally come to an end. The New England Patriots have once more made their way into the postseason, riding a 12-4 record to the 2-seed in the AFC and a first round bye.

The Patriots finished out the year by winning three of their last four, their only loss coming at the hands of the playoff-bound 49ers. While their win over the Jaguars was lackluster, they looked great in demolishing the Texans and shutting out Miami in the season's last game. The team looks to be in solid shape heading toward the Super Bowl.
