Kibbles and Picks 2022 - Week 10

I’ll be honest – this is not at all what I expected.

I figured after tying everything up last week, Week 9 would be the beginning of my long slow descent into yet another loss. Instead, I have one of my better weeks, putting up a 10-3 record. In addition, three of those wins came at Stella’s expense. That’s right – I’m back in the lead!

Will it last? Who can say? It might stick around for a bit, though, since Stella and I are at odds on just five of the week’s 13 contests. Doesn’t allow for any crazy big swings, but even so – if Stella’s right on four of those, we’re tied again. A sweep and she retakes the lead. Not crazy likely, but stranger things have happened.

We’ll kick things off in Tampa Bay, where I have the visiting Seahawks knocking off the host Buccaneers. I’ll be honest, I’m not sure just why I’m making this pick, other than the fact that as much as I love the guy, Tom Brady sure does look washed. He could easily bounce back and make this pick a real embarrassment, but for now, I’m guessing Kenneth Walker III runs all over them. Stella agrees that Brady has looked old in recent weeks, but she also believes that even Old Man Tommy can beat these Seahawks. She’s pretty sure Geno Smith is a mirage and expects the front seven of the Bucs to provide just enough trouble for Walker III that Tampa Bay can eke out a win, thanks to a few big plays from their receiving corps.

From there, we’re off to the Windy City; I’ve got the visiting Lions taking down the Bears. There’s something about this Detroit team that I like, even as they reel a bit from injury and roster turnover. It’s no one specific thing – I just feel like they’re riding high after knocking off the Packers and want to stick it to another division rival. Stella is a believer in this new-look Justin Fields. She thinks that the Bears QB will run all over the Lions defense, completing just enough passes to keep everybody honest. She doesn’t think what Fields is doing is sustainable, but she anticipates that he is going to be VERY productive in the near term.

In the Denver/Tennessee matchup, I’m picking the Titans to win at home, though I can’t say that I’m particularly confident. Stella’s got the Broncos, playing a bit of a hunch that they’re do for an offensive uptick. We’re agreed that this will probably be a pretty unpleasant game to watch, so it’s tough to care too much.

I have the Rams winning at home against the Cardinals, though I think it’s going to be a close one. This L.A. offense just hasn’t been able to get things going, thanks to a practically invisible running game and a wideout group where everybody not named Cooper Kupp has been some degree of disappointing. Still, I think they have enough to hold off an unsteady Arizona team. Stella also expects a close game, but one with a different outcome. She thinks Kyler Murray is going to be able to steer clear of the Rams pass rush to a degree, so that he might better target DeAndre Hopkins a dozen times or more. When Hopkins goes off, the Cards tend to win … and Stella is betting he goes off.

Lastly, in perhaps my most inexplicable pick of the slate, I’m taking the Chargers to win on the road against the 49ers. I’ll admit that I’m reluctant to let go of my crush on these guys, even though the evidence indicates that their performance doesn’t warrant my affection. That said, it feels like Austin Ekeler is ready to have one of those Austin Ekeler games where he rushes for a hundred, plus makes eight catches and scores twice. Hence my pick. Stella questions the logic in staking a pick on such an enormous performance by a non-QB. Plus, she thinks this San Francisco team has a chance to be one of the better squads in the NFL over the second half – and it starts now. Considering the wealth of offensive weapons the Niners trot out, Stella’s legitimately baffled as to how I can make this pick. Me too, Stella. Me too.

Anyway – that’s that! A short one this week, thanks to just five games. I’ve got the lead, but for how long? Follow along and find out!
