Kibbles and Picks 2019 - Week 16

Holy s—t – I might actually win this thing.

It’s not that Stella is underperforming – her 10-6 record in Week 15 was solid – so much as that I am on fire, putting up a 13-3 to add three more games to my lead. This action puts me at four games up with two weeks to play; I don’t believe that I have had this kind of advantage this far into the season since Year Two of this grand experiment (better known as the one year I actually won the damned thing).

I’m not counting my chickens though – there’s still plenty of time for me to blow it. And with us at odds on six of the weekend’s contests, Stella could certainly erase some or all of my lead with some good Week 16 luck.

First up is the Jacksonville/Atlanta tilt. I’m going with my gut here and picking the Jaguars. Yes, I know that the organization is in chaos and that the team is flailing, but I feel like Leonard Fournette has one big game left in him and that Atlanta is just the team to allow him to have it. Stella thinks I’m nuts; she recognizes that the Falcons aren’t good, but she also thinks that Matt Ryan will be able to throw on the Jags with impunity – don’t be surprised if wideout Julio Jones has a massive game against the Jacksonville secondary.

In what seems to be a no-brainer, I’ve picked New Orleans to win on the road against Tennessee. Drew Brees had about as good a game as a QB can have in breaking the career TD mark last week; I expect more of the same against the Titans. Keep an eye on Michael Thomas; New Orleans is going to try really hard to get him the single-season receptions mark, a number that is very much in reach. Stella is rolling the dice a little with the Titans, but she thinks that New Orleans is poised to suffer a bit of a letdown after all the pomp and circumstance of last week’s record-chasing performance. She also likes Derrick Henry to really take it to the front seven of the Saints.

In this week’s No One Cares Bowl, I’m picking the Bengals to win on the road against Miami. I have no reason for doing so except that Cincy is so bad that they're bad at losing. Stella thinks that this feisty Miami team will continue showing up for this one. Unless you’re a degenerate gambler or – God help you – a fan of one of these teams, you won’t be watching.

Most weeks, the NY Giants/Washington matchup would be a strong contender for No One Cares, but Cincy/Miami wins out. I went with the home team; Stella picked the road Giants. Neither one of us is the least bit confident in our choice. I picked Washington solely because wideout Terry McLaurin is going for me in my fantasy football championship matchup this week.

Perhaps the most important game of the week – at least as far as playoff implications are concerned – is the Dallas/Philadelphia matchup; it’s a de facto NL East division title game. I’ve got the Eagles winning at home; I don’t love the pick, but I feel like Philly will put forward a strong performance on their home field with the postseason on the line. Stella thinks that’s cute, but that I’m delusional – the Cowboys are the better team at just about every position on the field. She thinks Dallas will not only win, but dominate.

Last but not least, we have the Christmas Eve Eve game on Monday night. I’ve got the Packers going into Minnesota and beating the Vikings. I like Aaron Rodgers to have a vintage performance, while I expect Aaron Jones to run all over the Minnesota defense. They’ve been inconsistent, but I like Green Bay to get up for this game. Stella is pretty sure that the Vikings are poised to handle anything the Packers might bring to the table; she acknowledges the issues presented by the injury to running back Dalvin Cook, but she also thinks that the system is designed to work in a next man up-type situation. She’s got a hunch that the Vikings are sneaky good on both sides of the ball and a dark horse to make some noise into January.

And there we have it. A half-dozen games. Perhaps this is where I put some distance between us and cement my first K&P victory in a half-decade. Perhaps it’s where Stella puts the kibosh on this too-brief feeling of joyous accomplishment. Who knows? That’s why we play the games.
