Kibbles and Picks 2019 - Week 13

And look at that – I’m back on top!

Granted, it’s just one game, thanks to my 10-4 week. Stella did just fine at 9-5, but it wasn’t quite enough. And so I’ve regained my lead. Again – good weeks for both of us … just slightly better for me.

That could all change pretty quickly here in Week 13. Stella and I are at odds on eight games – fully half of the full 16-game slate. That’s a lot of room for one of us to make a move, although with the even number, we could just as easily wind up with another push.

We’ll start on Thanksgiving, where Stella and I disagree on two of the three contests.

First up is the game in Detroit, where I have the Lions holding serve at home against the Bears. While I don’t necessarily love the Lions offense, I feel like they’re due for a good win on Turkey Day. Plus, the Bears haven’t looked like world-beaters over the last few weeks. Stella thinks my hunch is nonsense; she doesn’t have any real affection for the Bears, but she’s pretty sure that Chicago will be able to take down the Lions with little issue. We agree, however, that this will be a bad game.

In an even more hunchy pick, I’m taking Buffalo to win in Dallas against the Cowboys. The Bills defense has had some hiccups in the last few weeks, but they still have something to offer. And I’m thinking that Buffalo QB Josh Allen will be able to handle his business; the Cowboys have struggled with some injury issues. Stella likes the Cowboys here; she thinks that Dak Prescott is the best player on either team and that he will have little problem against even this strong Bills defense. And don’t sleep on Zeke Elliott, either.

Next, in maybe the most brazen pick of this year’s entire Kibbles and Picks season thus far, Stella is picking the Bengals to win their first game of the year. I went with the Jets, even though the Jets are not very good, because they’re riding high after their big win over Oakland and QB Sam Darnold looks like he might be figuring some stuff out. Stella refuses to back down from this pick; she feels that the Bengals are not going to go 0-16 and that this is perhaps their best shot at the W. With rumors swirling that Andy Dalton is returning to his place under center, she’s ready to roll the dice.

In a game with potential playoff implications, I’m going with the Colts to win at home against the Titans. I know that Indy is dealing with some major injuries – the hand issue for running back Marlon Mack foremost among them – but I still like them to hang in there and score enough to eke out a narrow win. Stella likes Tennessee here; she doesn’t think that Ryan Tannehill is actually as good as he’s been in the last month, but she thinks he’ll keep it going long enough to beat the Colts. She also expects Derrick Henry to continue his excellent stretch running the ball. Those elements combined mean that the Titans should win fairly easily.

We’re at odds on the rematch between the Browns and the Steelers. I’m going with the Steelers to win at home. Yes, the quarterback situation is still a mess and they’re on their third-string running back, but the Pittsburgh D is solid and Cleveland isn’t ready to bounce back from the controversy. Stella thinks that the absence of Myles Garrett will be a nonissue. She’s expecting good things from Baker Mayfield and Odell Beckham and the double-decker backfield threat of Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt. Either way, expect fireworks – and not the great kind.

There’s always at least one inconsequential game on these lists – this time, we’re looking at Tampa Bay/Jacksonville. I’m going with the Jaguars at home, Stella’s going with the Buccaneers on the road. Mine’s the safe pick, hers is the exciting one. Neither of us really care all that much.

I’ve got the Rams winning in Arizona against the Cardinals. Obviously, the Rams haven’t looked great over the past month or so. Jared Goff has struggled under center, as has the rest of the offense. The defense has had its glitches as well. That being said, I have to think that they’ll turn it around – and Arizona is a great place to do that. Stella disagrees; she’s counting on a big game out of QB Kyler Murray. She doesn’t think that L.A. can stop him. She’s warier of the Arizona running game, but she still likes their chances.

Finally, in the Monday night game, I’m going with the Vikings to win on the road against Seattle. It’ll be interesting to see how Kirk Cousins leads the Minnesota offense against the Seahawks. They’ve got some strong weapons, led by running back Dalvin Cook, and a surprisingly solid defense to boot. It won’t be easy, but it should be enough. Stella likes Seattle to take the win at home; she loves Russell Wilson against this Vikings team. Her main concern regarding the Seahawks offense involves Chris Carson holding onto the ball. As long as they avoid turnovers, they’ll be fine – and she thinks they’ll avoid them just fine.

And there we have it. Eight games. We’ll have to wait and see if my newly-achieved one-game lead will hold up or if Stella will retake command. If she wants to make a move, she needs to do it soon. As you might imagine, she remains unconcerned.
