Kibbles and Picks 2018 - Week 3

All right then.

We maintained the status quo after Week 2. Stella and I both wound up with identical 9-6-1 records (yet another tie – we’re hoping we’re done with all of that, but considering how lousy the kicking has been across the board, we might be in for more).

On our differences of opinion, we both batted .500. I was right on three, she was right on three and then there was of course Green Bay/Minnesota. For the record, I predicted victories for the Chiefs, the Colts and the Cowboys, while Stella picked Cincinnati, Miami and Chicago to win.

This week, we’re again at odds on seven different games.

The first (and likely worst) is Thursday night’s Jets/Browns tilt. I’m picking Cleveland to finally get a win, but I obviously don’t feel great about it. Ditto Stella, who’s going with the Jets because she must pick someone. This will be a bad game; very few outcomes would surprise us.

Next up is the matchup between the Saints and the Falcons in Atlanta. I like what I’ve seen from New Orleans in terms of their offensive potential; I think they’ll be able to move the ball against a suspect Falcons D. Alvin Kamara is going to have a big game. Stella thinks it’ll be a high-scoring affair, but believes it’ll be Atlanta on top. She’s a fan of what she saw from the Falcons running game and, oh yeah, Julio Jones is still here. We’re both counting on a shootout.

As for Oakland/Miami, I’m going with the Dolphins at home. There’s not a lot to like about Miami, honestly. They haven’t looked spectacular, but they’ve won. Look for that unimpressive winning streak to continue, thanks to ineptitude on the part of the Raiders. Stella thinks that Jon Gruden is going to get his first W here; the Oakland defense isn’t great, but she feels like Derek Carr and company are due to put up some points – enough to land the Fins their first loss.

In one of my infamous gut picks, I’m going with the Broncos against the Ravens. This despite the fact that Denver is playing in Baltimore; I just have a hunch that Case Keenum and the Broncos young running backs are going to perform well. Stella thinks my hunch is cute, but has little doubt that the Ravens will be more than capable of handling their business on their home turf. She doesn’t find Baltimore particularly impressive, but believes they’ve got enough to deal with Denver.

I like Houston at home against the Giants. The reality is that the Texans haven’t quite managed to put everything together yet this season, but the pieces are all there. I’m betting that both the offense and the defense really start to cohere starting this week. Stella thinks the dynamic duo of Odell Beckham Jr. and Saquon Barkley will be able to do enough to take down Houston, though she admits that both will need exceptional performances to pull it off. She thinks it’ll happen.

The matchup between Dallas and Seattle features two teams that feel like they’re reeling a bit. I’m taking the Cowboys on the road; the Seattle defense looks to be crumbling a bit, leaving them vulnerable to Zeke Elliott on the ground. Stella thinks the Seahawks will be able to hold their own on defense and that QB Russell Wilson will manage to do just enough to eke out the victory. It’ll be a close game, but Stella thinks Seattle gets the win.

Finally, in the Monday night game, I’m taking the Steelers over the Buccaneers. While Pittsburgh hasn’t looked great in the first two weeks, they have too much offensive firepower to continue to flail. The Steelers skill position players all look awfully good. However, Stella thinks Tampa Bay’s unexpected hot streak will continue on their home field. She feels like Ryan Fitzpatrick is ready to continue airing it out for the Bucs. She admits to feeling weird about this pick, but believes it to be the correct one.

There you have it. Our Week 3 picks. I remain in the lead. Wish me luck in staying there.
