Kibbles and Picks 2016 Week 8

Another week of maintaining the status quo.

Neither Stella nor myself did particularly well in Week 7. We split our head-to-head matchups and ultimately wound up with matching 8-6 records, plus the and-one tie that we share thanks to that abysmal 6-6 Cardinals/Seahawks abomination on Sunday night.

With the bye weeks starting to really kick in, we've got fewer games to pick from. However, we still managed to disagree on five of the Week 8 matchups.

It starts with the first tilt of the week, a game no one cares about on Thursday night. Stella's going with the Titans to win the game on their home field. Their running game shouldn't have too much trouble with the Jacksonville defense. I'm thinking that the Jaguars are due for a fluky breakout game; I doesn't think they're good, mind you just good enough to beat the Titans. I've got the Chiefs winning a road game, going into Indianapolis and beating the Colts. I like the way they've looked with Spencer Ware running the ball; Indy likely won't have an answer for him. Stella disagrees; she thinks Ware disappoints. She also likes Andrew Luck to get the offense going in the dome she's taking the Colts.

My affection for the Oakland Raiders continues. To my mind, the Raiders should have more than enough firepower to take down the Buccaneers; there's a lot to like about their passing game. Stella claims that the Tampa Bay defense is better than you think and that Oakland's is worse; she thinks Jameis Winston is poised to do some work in this game particularly on his home field. In yet another example of me picking the road team, I'm taking the Lions. I don't think the Texans defense is working right now; I think they struggle against Matthew Stafford chucking it up 40-plus times. Stella thinks that Houston's offense gets back on track against an iffy Detroit defense (note: she wants it made clear that this pick is contingent on Lamar Miller's health).

Finally, I like the Cowboys to win at home against Philadelphia. While the Eagles defense has been great, I don't think they can handle the punishment that Ezekiel Elliott can dish out in the ground game. Stella, on the other hand, thinks Philly's scheme will rattle rookie QB Dak Prescott; they've been opportunistic thus far and she expects that trend to continue. She also expects a bounceback-type day from Carson Wentz.

So there we have it just five games apart this week. I'm confident in most of my picks (although we can all agree that Thursday night games are essentially coin flips), but the reality is that it is when I'm at my most confident that Stella tends to take me down a peg or two. Still just three down I remain within striking distance.
