Kibbles and Picks 2016 – Week 13

The hot streak continues at Kibbles and Picks.

After a lengthy run of mediocrity, it has been nice to have a strong couple of weeks. Week 12 was a particularly strong one – I went off to the tune of 13-3; my best week of the season. That’s how you make up some ground, right?

Yeah, no.

See, Stella went ahead and went 12-4 her own adorable self. So despite my exceptional work last week, I cut one measly game from Stella’s lead. I’ve got it down to five, but time is running out – we’re three-quarters through the season.

As for this Week 13, Stella and I are in disagreement on six of the week’s 15 contests. It’s another chance to make a move, but it’s starting to feel like Stella is just toying with me, letting me stick around for a while before really stepping on the gas. We’ll see how it goes.

First up, I’ve got New Orleans beating Detroit. While the Lions have the better record, going into New Orleans and beating the Saints on their home turf is tough. Drew Brees and company are going to come out firing; I just don’t think Detroit can score enough to keep up. Stella disagrees and thinks that Jim Bob Cooter’s offensive scheme will allow the Lions to run with the Saints, while she feels that the Detroit defense can stifle the Saints just enough to allow for a Lions victory.

I’ve got the Ravens winning in Baltimore against the visiting Dolphins, though I don’t feel super confident about it. Miami has been hot, but I think the Ravens defense will be stout enough to hold serve on their home field. Stella’s not necessarily a Dolphins believer, but she thinks their momentum will help push them past a Ravens team with a few holes. She thinks Miami will find a way to score against the Ravens and keep Joe Flacco and the rest of the Baltimore offense in check.

In our semi-regular “game no one gives a crap about” face-off, Stella is picking the Bears at home, while I’m picking the visiting 49ers to win. Neither of these teams is very good, so we’re pretty much just flipping coins at this point. I think Colin Kaepernick continues his recent spate of strong QB play and pushes his team to a win over a reeling Chicago team. Stella’s making a gut call here – she’s concerned about the Bears on offense, but she thinks they’ll be able to get it done defensively. But again – nobody cares.

I’m picking another road team in this next one; I think Washington has enough to get it done in Arizona. Kirk Cousins has been excellent and looks poised to continue against the Cardinals. If they can get the run game going, it’ll be a long day for Arizona. Stella’s not worried – she’s basically subscribing to the best-player-on-the-field theory, that player being Arizona’s David Johnson. She doesn’t think Washington has an answer for him and is predicting a huge game-changing performance from the running back.

I’m picking the Chargers to win their game at home. Philip Rivers continues to perform well and running back Melvin Gordon looks legit. They’re ready to score a bunch of points in San Diego and I question Tampa Bay’s ability to stop them. Stella likes the Buccaneers this week; she was impressed with how they handled Seattle last week and think they can similarly stifle the Chargers. With Doug Martin on the mend and Mike Evans looking like an elite wideout, Tampa Bay looks primed for the road win.

And finally, in the Monday night game, Stella is picking the Jets to win at home. She’s not particularly impressed with the team, but she likes them a heck of a lot more than the Colts. It’s going to be a low-scoring affair – and likely an ugly one at that – but she figures the Jets will get the W. I’m playing a hunch here – I like the Colts to bounce back after their Thanksgiving debacle. Andrew Luck is scheduled to return and I think he can exploit some weaknesses in the Jets secondary. Of course, if Luck doesn’t play, this is going to look like a particularly stupid pick.

And there we have it. Time to try and keep digging myself out of the hole. Wish me luck.
