Illegal eels

BANGOR (AP) — Two baby eel dealers are facing misdemeanor charges for illegal sales as Maine moves to increase oversight over the lucrative industry.

The Bangor Daily News reports that Department of Marine Resources spokesman Jeff Nichols says two Maine dealers are accused of making illegal cash purchases last spring of the eels, also known as elvers.

Both dealers face license suspensions along with misdemeanor charges for allegedly purchasing elvers without a required swipe card.

Nichols said the investigation into illegal sales is ongoing.

Fishery regulators have faced increased poaching and smuggling since the value of elvers jumped from an average price of $100 per pound a decade ago to over $2,300 per pound last year.

Maine’s holding public hearings on proposals to make it harder to conceal illegal cash transactions from inspectors.

Corinth drug bust

CORINTH – Two men were arrested recently on drug charges in the town of Corinth.

On Dec. 5, agents with the North Central Task Force, assisted by the Maine State Police and Penobscot County Sherriff’s office, arrested 46-year-old Shawn Bowman of Corinth and 30-year-old Angel Lugo of Bethlehem, CT and executed a search warrant at Bowman’s home on Ledge Hill Road in Corinth.

Several weeks ago, MDEA agents opened an investigation into reports of heroin and crack cocaine sales from Bowman’s home in Corinth. That investigation included agents purchasing drugs directly from Bowman on at least two occasions.

On Dec. 5, MDEA agents, troopers and deputy sheriffs raided Bowman’s home with a warrant and seized over twenty-eight grams of crack cocaine, four grams of heroin, a loaded 12-gauge shotgun, a loaded Glock 9mm pistol and $8,000 which is believed to be proceeds from the sale of drugs.

Bowman is charged with two counts of unlawful trafficking in crack cocaine, one count of aggravated trafficking in crack cocaine and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person (felon).  Lugo is charged with aggravated trafficking in crack cocaine.

This investigation is continuing and more arrests are possible.

Pig in a poke

PALMYRA (AP) — Maine State Police say they helped corral a rather “unruly’ pig on the run along Interstate 95.

State police say in a Facebook post they were alerted to the “uncooperative” pig along the interstate in Palmyra on Wednesday.

Police say the pig was spotted several times over the past week, but had managed to elude capture.

Authorities say Cpt. Rick Moody and Trooper Jeremy Caron moved the pig off the highway with the help of a town animal control officer.

When asked if police read the pig its Miranda rights, police jokingly responded “he waived the right to remain silent.”

No injuries were reported.
