Man arrested for assault and threatening with gun

BANGOR An area man was arrested for allegedly brandishing a shotgun and assaulting a woman.

On Oct. 26 around 4:35 a.m., Bangor police were called to Seamus' Store on the corner of Blue Hill East and Finson Roads for the report of an assault. Police were told that two women (a mother and her adult daughter) were in their home on Dirigo Drive when Jared Ross who was also in the home became angry. He reportedly brandished a shotgun and assaulted the mother.

Both women fled the residence and went to the store, where they reported the assault. The mother was treated by Bangor Fire Rescue for a laceration to her head and was later transported to the hospital. The daughter told police that her 11-month-old baby was still in the residence.

The Bangor Police Department's Special Response Team was called in along with the Robot Team to work with police negotiators to speak with Ross. The remote-controlled robot was used to clear the first floor of the residence. Once that was accomplished, the response team entered the residence. Ross was found on the second floor and surrendered peacefully, according to police.

Police located the daughter's infant, unharmed, and reunited her with the mother.

Ross was charged with class B felony aggravated assault with a dangerous weapon and misdemeanor domestic violence assault. He was taken to Penobscot County Jail.

Police warn of new phone scam

BANGOR On Oct. 23, Officer Chris Blanchard received a complaint from a woman who believed that someone was attempting to scam her. The woman told police that she received a call with caller ID indicating 'Emergency 911,' and a man on the phone advised her of a warrant for her arrest, saying she needed to call Officer Richard Johnson at a Texas phone number to make financial payment.

Officer Blanchard called the number and was given the run around. He finally called the Texas Attorney General's Office and they confirmed that this is a nationwide scam they are working on and have had numerous complaints about.

Police are advising anyone who receives a phone call from someone claiming to be in powerful position demanding money, to check the source to make certain it is reliable. In most cases, it is not. Do not ever give personal information about yourself to anyone claiming to need it for business purposes unless you are absolutely certain you are dealing with a reputable institution.

Call your local police department if you think someone is attempting to scam you.
