During the course of the investigation, officers were able to identify the two suspects and make arrests. Sanborn was arrested at an Old Town pawn shop later that morning at 10:46 a.m. Police continued the investigation and surveillance throughout the day. Taylor was arrested at a Main Street residence at 8:04 p.m. Both men were taken to the Penobscot County Jail.
Taylor is being held on a probation hold and has been charged with class B burglary and class C theft. Sanborn was originally charged with class C receiving stolen property. Additional charges are possible as the investigation continues.
Pain at the pump
HARRINGTON On Nov. 30, Maine State Tpr. Keith York summoned Benjamin Follette, 20, of Prospect Harbor, for criminal mischief. After a disagreement with an employee at the Harrington Irving about pre-paid gas, Benjamin walked out of the store and punched the gas pump screen, disabling the gas pump.
Raccoon has rabid fan
SORRENTO An unknown animal vigilante made off with an injured raccoon rather than let authorities euthanize it and test it for rabies.
On Dec. 7, Tpr. Cliff Peterson received a report of an injured raccoon in the roadway in Sorrento. The caller requested the raccoon be taken to a veterinarian to be rehabilitated. The warden service contacted the caller as Peterson was not in the area. When the concerned party learned that the raccoon would have to be euthanized and tested for rabies, she put the raccoon in her vehicle and fled from the area. The caller refused to tell the warden service where she was.
Neither she nor the raccoon has been heard from since.
Walgreens robber arrested
BANGOR Police said they arrested Kevin Gray, 30, for allegedly robbing the Walgreen Pharmacy on Broadway on Dec. 4 around 2:30 p.m. He was taken to Penobscot County Jail shortly after the incident.
Man assaults officer and mental health liaison
BANGOR A Bangor man is facing several charges, including felonies, for reportedly assaulting an officer and a mental health liaison.
On Dec. 3, Officer Ed Mercier, the department's Bangor Housing liaison, received a report of a domestic abuse case and met with a female victim and her friend in his office on Davis Road. After interviewing them, Mercier felt he had probable cause to arrest Anthony King, 24, of Bangor.
Officer Tim Shaw was working that area and responded to a Deer Isle address in order to interview and possibly arrest King. Shaw arrived at the residence and was accompanied by the department's mental health liaison. The officer interviewed King and told him that he was arresting him for domestic assault.
When Shaw attempted to handcuff King, he reportedly resisted and a struggle ensued with the officer and the mental health liaison who tried to assist Shaw. King reportedly attempted a choke hold on Shaw, but the officer was able to defend himself despite King punching and kicking both the officer and the liaison, according to police. Shaw drew his Taser and warned King that he would deploy the device on him if he didn't stop resisting. King became compliant and was placed under arrest.
Both Shaw and the liaison officer received minor injuries.
King was charged with felony assault on a police officer, felony domestic violence assault, felony refusing to submit to arrest, misdemeanor assault, disorderly conduct and terrorizing. He also had an active warrant.
He was taken to Penobscot County Jail.
Detective is promoted to sergeant
BANGOR Det. David P. Bushey was recently promoted to the rank of sergeant.
Bushey is a 10-year veteran of the Bangor Police Department. He served four years with the U.S. Coast Guard prior to joining the Bangor Police Department and the last two years as part of the Coast Guard's law enforcement counter-drug efforts. In 1996, Bushey earned an associate's degree from the University of Maine.
Upon joining the Bangor Police Department in early 2003, Bushey was assigned to the patrol division. In March of 2008, he was re-assigned to the Bangor Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division (CID) as a detective.
According to interim Chief Peter Arno, 'Sgt. Bushey possesses a vast amount of law enforcement knowledge and experience; this combined with his personality and professionalism makes him an excellent choice for this promotion.'
Bushey will be assigned to the patrol division as a first line supervisor. As part of these duties, he will also oversee the department's field training program for newly hired officers.
Bushey currently lives in Hermon with his wife, Monica.
Fatal crash in Old Town
OLD TOWN Police are investigating a fatal accident that occurred in Old Town over the weekend.
On Dec. 9, around 4:52 a.m., the Old Town Police and Fire Departments responded to a motor vehicle crash on Main Street near Stillwater Avenue. Upon arrival, officers found that a tan 2007 Dodge Caliber had struck a utility pole and rolled over. The driver had been ejected. A man was trapped in the vehicle and had to be extricated by the Old Town Fire Department. A second male passenger and a female passenger were out of the vehicle.
The driver, a 23-year-old man from Carmel, was transported to Eastern Maine Medical Center and was pronounced dead. The passengers included a 24-year-old OId Town woman and a 21-year-old Old Town man, both of whom were injured. The 23-year-old Brewer man who had been trapped in the vehicle is in critical condition.
The crash is being reconstructed by the Old Town Police Department with the assistance of the Maine State Police. The Orono Police Department and Orono Fire Department assisted at the scene.
Speed appears to have been a factor in the accident. The investigation will continue to determine other possible contributing factors.
