WATERVILLE - United Way of Mid-Maine kicked off their annual fundraising campaign amid the cheers of over 100 community partners who celebrated at the organization's campaign kick-off breakfast held at Spectrum Generations in Waterville.

TJ and Kerry Smart, who own and operate Veilleux and Redington Funeral Homes and are the 2013/2014 Campaign Chairs, described how they chose this year's campaign theme 'Join our team and make a difference in our communities.' 'When thinking of our theme we wanted it to reflect us but also touch other people. We both have been so fortunate and blessed in our lives to be part of teams, whether it was participating on a team, coaching a team or just using teamwork to get things done in our everyday life,' said Smart. 'The other piece that we found so important was making a difference.  That is exactly what we are here to do, and we hope you will help us inspire that passion in the people around you as well.'

In keeping with the theme, two very special guest speakers kept the audience captivated: legendary Coaches Jimmy Poulin and Dick Whitmore. Both described the critical elements of teamwork and used their coaching experiences as analogies for United Way of Mid-Maine's work in and for the community.

Several examples of United Way of Mid-Maine's impact, both through partner agency programs and through local community initiatives as well as the need for a team-based approach to the fundraising campaign, were highlighted. Tina Chapman, United Way of Mid-Maine's president/CPO, said, 'We have before us a huge opportunity an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of our neighbors, family members, friends and friends whose acquaintance we have not yet met.'
