Celebrity Slam - Conor vs. Fitty: Beef Edition

Ah, beef. Sweet succulent celebrity beef. We love it ever so much here at Celebrity Slam. It’s one of our absolute favorite meals. Doesn’t matter what kind of cut – sirloin or strip or T-bone or ribeye, we don’t care. It’s all delicious.

But we will admit to liking plenty of sizzle with our steak, which is why we’re delighted that a long-simmering feud has made its way back onto the high heat.

For those who don’t remember much about the sporting travesty that was the Floyd Mayweather/Conor McGregor boxing match, well … lucky you. But one of the few actually fun things to come out of that debacle was the bubbling beef between McGregor and rapper 50 Cent.

See, McGregor was mad because Fitty took Mayweather’s side in the lead-up to the fight (just like every other rational person in the world; they’re both terrible humans, but only one of them was actually, you know, a BOXER), so he called him a derogatory name that starts with a “B” and rhymes with “witch.” Fitty responded by mocking one of McGregor’s UFC losses and saying that he could take the MMA fighter in a street fight no problem.

There was some occasional sniping in the months that followed, but things are heating up again, with McGregor taking the first shot on social media, where he said:

“[50 Cent] blocked me on [Instagram]. The mad 50 year old instagram blocker. Ahh don't block me 50 kid, I still like some of your songs. The older ones hahah.”

Fitty fired back the next day, posting a video in which he mocked McGregor’s current relationship with Rita Ora and implying that McGregor actually cheated with her behind the back of his previous girlfriend. He has since taken the video down, but one imagines the damage is done.

Is there anything better than famous people behaving like idiot children in the public eye? This kind of nonsense is entertaining no matter who it is, but this one has the potential to become something special. After all, if we were to try and decide which category of celebrity was the best at beef, it would have to come down to hip-hop guys and athletes. And now, we have one of the most vocal and unapologetic figures from each of those realms going at each other. Sure, it’ll probably peter out.

But what if it doesn’t?

Look, do we love that McGregor basically called 50 Cent out for behaving like a teenaged girl on Instagram? Of course we do. Sliding in some shots at his current relevance by way of a backhanded compliment is a particularly nice touch. McGregor might have built his career by fighting with his fists, but he built his fame by fighting with his words. His troll game is top-tier; he revels in pushing buttons. Why? Who cares? There’s no way of knowing why a dude like Conor McGregor does what he does.

Of course, 50 Cent is a guy who has lasted a long time in the hip-hop world, where it’s probably fair to say that there are a few more verbally vicious guys than you’ll find in the UFC. However, it’s unfortunate that he chose to get at McGregor through those around him. It’s kind of a cheap shot, but you don’t get to where Fitty sits by worrying about the rules. He did take the video down, so there’s that, but still – bad form.

The obvious question is why now. McGregor is far too calculating to have stoked this particular fire for no reason. It’s probably just because he’s the sort who can’t stand to not be in the spotlight, but it’s possible that there’s a greater motivation at work. Tough to say. As for why 50 Cent engaged, that’s more difficult to parse. Is it as simple as needing to hit back when hit? Could be – Fitty’s never been one to back away from a fight.

Regardless, we can only hope for some sort of escalation. The entertainment potential of an extended war of words between these two clowns is significant. Let’s cross our fingers and hope that they start going bigger. Or start bringing other famous folks into the fray. Or – ideally – both.

At any rate, this could well be the beginnings of 2018’s biggest beef. Stay tuned.
