Maine employers seek Next Step Maine scholarship

AUGUSTA- This year, thousands of Maine employees from more than 260 businesseswill have the opportunity to be nominated for the Next Step Maine scholarship program. The program awards funds to Maine employees that are currently pursuing a bachelor's degree, associate's degree or certificate program.

Since 2013,the Next Step Maine program has contributed more than $71,000 in scholarships and helped 50 Maine employees attain advanced education in their field.The deadline for nominations isApril 22, 2016. The scholarships will be presented in May.To submit a nomination, Maine companies can complete the nomination process at www.nextstepmaine.org/next-step-maine-scholarship.

The program is part of the Maine Development Foundation (MDF), a private, non-partisan membership organization that drives sustainable, long-term economic growth for the state of Maine. MDF's strategic focus is a productive workforce.

'Maine has thousands of employees who are looking to continue their education and further develop their skills. This program allows those hard-working men and women to get more specific training and keep up the training and skills that are needed in their profession. We are extremely proud of the alumni from this program because of the work they have done and continue to do. They are all great ambassadors for the success of this program and Maine's workforce,' said Yellow Breen, president of Maine Development Foundation.

Recent alumni of the program have experienced success in a variety of ways, including pay increases, promotion and career advancement.The goal of the Next Step Maine scholarship program is to support and recognize working adults who are going to school while managing jobs, families, and other responsibilities.

To be considered for a 2016 Next Step Maine scholarship, the employer must be a Next Step Maine employerand complete an employer nominator form and an employee nominee form. Companies that are interested in becoming a Next Step Maine employer must complete the application process and nomination process byApril 22.

Scholarships are available for employees of Next Step Maine employers - committed employers who have joined a no-cost statewide initiative to advance the educational attainment of Maine's workforce.
