BANGOR - Summertime means that the Bangor Humane Society is full of pets awaiting adoption. In an effort to increase pet adoptions, the Humane Society is offering a variety of discounted prices and promotions on pet adoptions throughout the summer.

Additionally, hard economic times also mean that pets are being surrendered to the Humane Society at an alarming rate because their owners can no longer afford to care for them.

The adoption center is currently full of dogs available for adoption and has over 200 cats and kittens in the facility and in foster homes awaiting adoption within the next month.

This is the time of year is known as "kitten season," as hundreds or thousands of female cats in our community deliver litters of kittens. Since June 1, hundreds of cats and kittens have been surrendered by area residents. The number of owner-surrendered pets to the Humane Society is expected to continue to grow throughout the rest of the summer months.

Adoptive families are urgently needed! The shelter is currently near maximum capacity and the growing number will seen be a health risk to the adoptive cat population. The Bangor Humane Society is now asking for help from the public to help find forever homes for all of the pets looking for a second chance.

The Bangor Humane Society champions the humane treatment and adoption of companion animals, provides quality care for homeless pets, and promotes animal welfare through education and advocacy.
